The veteran Cantopop trio Grasshopper brought their expansive, four-year global trek, the RE : GRASSHOPPER World Tour, to a triumphant close recently, culminating in a sold-out final performance at the Guangzhou Gymnasium. The concert served as the definitive capstone to a series spanning 15 cities worldwide, delivering an emotionally charged and high-stakes evening of spectacular choreography and tight harmonies, despite an unexpected technical blip expertly navigated by the performers.
The show opened explosively with high-octane tracks like “Glittering Stage” (華麗舞台) and “Three Minutes of Indulgence” (三分鐘放縱), immediately igniting the audience who waved light sticks and sang along in unison. The group, comprising brothers Calvin Choy Yat-chi and Remus Choy Yat-kit, alongside Edmond So Chi-wai, maintained the relentless energy characteristic of their four decades in the industry.
Onstage Quick Thinking Saves Performance Momentum
A moment of genuine concert drama unfolded during the performance of the hit “Red Lips Kiss” (紅唇的吻) when a simple equipment mix-up occurred between the Choy brothers. Remus Choy Yat-kit recounted the incident backstage, noting he realized his microphone had been swapped with Calvin’s when his in-ear monitor failed to transmit his own voice.
“Our microphones were inadvertently switched,” Remus explained. “The moment I started singing, I couldn’t hear myself.” His brother, Calvin, noticed the problem when his own monitor went silent and observed Remus communicating through frantic eye signals.
“I realized I had zero audio [in my monitor] and immediately saw that Remus was giving me a very peculiar look,” Calvin said. In a fluid, choreographed move that appeared seamlessly integrated into the performance, Calvin leaped onto his brother’s riser, and the two executed a swift, elegant mid-song microphone exchange. The smooth recovery drew gasps and applause from the audience—and reportedly, surprise from fellow member Edmond So, who had been completely unaware of the technical hiccup until after the song concluded.
Honoring Legends and Emotional Farewells
Adding a layer of gravitas to the final show, two sisters of the late, revered Cantopop icon Roman Tam—a deeply respected mentor to Grasshopper—attended the concert. They presented the trio with gifts backstage before the show, receiving autographed “Concert Passes” in return, a gesture that visibly thrilled them.
As the concert neared its finale, the atmosphere shifted to profound sentiment. During the closing song, “The World Will Become Beautiful” (世界會變得很美), the entire arena lit up as fans switched on their mobile phone flashlights, creating a stunning field of stars visible across the venue.
Despite the fervor, Calvin apologized to the Guangzhou audience for the inability to take spontaneous song requests, explaining that the setlist required advance regulatory approval. He promised fans to send their desired deep cuts via social media, vowing to perform them during their upcoming Hong Kong run. To mitigate any disappointment, the group surprised the crowd by reprising the opening dance medley as an authentic, unplanned encore.
“This is the true Encore, starting everything over again,” Calvin exclaimed. “Grasshopper’s culture is always non-stop. In this entire four-year tour, we have never done this scene before!”
Looking Ahead to Hong Kong
The trio expressed deep emotion regarding the tour’s conclusion. Remus Choy reflected on the personal challenges faced over the past few years, including the pandemic and his own brain surgery, celebrating that those trials were now past.
“We had so many unforgettable moments at every stop,” Remus shared, emphasizing how the sight of every fan’s smile and reaction was permanently imprinted in his memory. Edmond So lamented the retirement of their elaborate costumes, suggesting they might be preserved for a future fashion exhibition.
Meanwhile, Calvin revealed he nearly broke down emotionally while performing “Framily”, a song dedicating to the enduring bond with their fans. “Seeing this level of passion is truly moving,” he said. “If you support us for 40 years, you are nothing less than our ‘Framily.’”
With the global tour now complete, Grasshopper immediately turns its focus to the next chapter. The group announced the Grasshopper Three In Love Concert 2026, scheduled for April 28 to May 3 at the Hong Kong Coliseum (Hung Hom). Remus noted that promotional activities and an intense workload are already underway for the next series of shows.
“After tonight’s celebration dinner, we must immediately pack away this difficult-to-say-goodbye emotion into a safe deposit box,” Calvin affirmed. “We will see you in April at the Hong Kong Coliseum!”
