Hong Kong – Singer-songwriter Jay Fung and rising vocalist Wang Zheng Jun Ren delivered energetic performances on Saturday at the Gimme LiVe Music Festival, treating fans to an afternoon of live music and intimate interaction. Wang, making his festival debut, expressed delight at connecting with audiences up close.
The appearance comes weeks after Wang received praise for warming up the crowd on the talent show Midlife Good Voice 4, where some viewers said his vocals outshone the actual contestants. Wang downplayed the comparison, explaining that guest performers operate without competitive pressure. “I wasn’t competing, so there was no stress. I just opened up and sang freely—that naturally makes a difference,” he said.
Wang also weighed in on this season’s winner, Yoon Kyung-soon, a fellow Malaysian known for his strikingly high-pitched female-style singing. Wang said he looks forward to collaborating with Yoon, joking, “We can duel on high notes on stage—that would be a lot of fun.”
The conversation turned to Yu Shu-ching, a fan favorite who was eliminated early despite strong odds. Wang called her exit “a real shame,” noting he had pegged her as a top-three contender. “A competition isn’t just about rankings—opportunities can come even without a title. I didn’t place either when I started,” he said, referring to his own earlier contest experience. He revealed Yu was upset for two days afterward and blamed herself, puzzled as to why the music was halted during her performance. “She has plenty of competition experience, but that moment stumped her. Thankfully, she’s in better spirits now.” To console her, Wang treated Yu to a buffet meal.
Meanwhile, Jay Fung announced he will release three new songs this month, including a duet with Jason Chan titled Snapshot. Fung originally wrote the track for Chan, but later rewrote English lyrics so the two could record it together. Asked about recent social media banter where he affectionately called singer Cloud Wan “Cloud BB,” Fung clarified that his fiancée is not jealous. “She knows I play a big-brother role with Cloud. There’s a lot of trust between us.”
On wedding plans, Fung said no date has been set. True to his low-key personality, he prefers a simple ceremony—perhaps just a signing followed by dinner with close family.
