Supper Moment teams up with Simon Yam for new Cantonese single video

Hong Kong rock band Supper Moment has recruited veteran actor Simon Yam to direct and star in the music video for their new Cantonese single “Until Contradictions Dissolve.” The track marks the band’s first Cantonese release in a year and a half.

The song was composed by Supper Moment, with lyrics by Xiao Ke. Yam’s involvement also marks the first time he has worked with the band on a music video.

A star-studded collaboration

The collaboration came together after the band and Yam met at a company annual dinner, where they fell into conversation about film, music and performance. Yam was reportedly drawn to the track immediately, describing it as full of emotion and imagery.

On set, the veteran actor took charge of the visual side of the production, personally overseeing camera work, framing and the band’s performances. He also coached the band members on their acting in individual scenes. Supper Moment later joked that the shoot felt like a masterclass in acting rather than a typical music video production.

A night of contradictions on set

The video was shot overnight, and the production was not without its moments of tension. Guitarist CK took a fall from a large rope net during filming, prompting a concerned Yam to check on him. CK quickly reassured the actor that he was fine.

But the most memorable contradiction of the night belonged to CK himself. The guitarist admits he has a strong aversion to tomatoes, yet one scene required him to eat one on camera. He laughed about the irony, saying the moment summed up the song’s central theme: life is full of contradictions.

“Until Contradictions Dissolve” explores the push and pull of everyday emotions. It acknowledges that people rarely feel one thing at a time, and that opposing feelings often coexist. The lyrics move through images of “awakening and drunkenness,” “excitement and anger,” and “liberation and self-imprisonment,” reflecting the messy, unresolved nature of human experience.

The band has said the song is not about resolving those contradictions, but about learning to accept them. “Instead of obsessing over answers,” they explain, “the song encourages us to live with uncertainty and accept imperfection.”

Finding balance in everyday life

Those themes carried into the band members’ own reflections. Vocalist Sunny noted that fatherhood has made him more aware of how joy and worry can exist at the same time. Bassist Ah Kei added that being a musician often means balancing creative freedom with the pressures of the industry.

Drummer Ada, meanwhile, found a lighter contradiction during the shoot: after spending time on hair and makeup, he immediately got messy during a performance scene. “You look perfect for about five seconds,” he joked, “then the music starts.”

Sold-out Macau show, but still waiting on the Coliseum

The release of “Until Contradictions Dissolve” comes as Supper Moment enjoys a string of recent successes. The band’s upcoming concert in Macau in November has already sold out, and tickets are no longer available.

Still, one goal remains out of reach for now. Supper Moment has been open about their dream of returning to the Hong Kong Coliseum, but their repeated applications for performance dates have not yet been approved. Fans are hoping that the momentum from their new single and sold-out shows will eventually push the band back to the stage they know best.
