Ex-Lolly Talk Star Elka Cheng Enlists Lyricist Titans for Blazing Solo Debut

HONG KONG — Elka Cheng, formerly of the popular girl group Lolly Talk, has kicked off her solo career under the moniker elka with a project that has stunned the Cantopop industry. Her cross-year music plan, stretching into 2027, features original songs penned by Hong Kong’s three most legendary lyricists. The momentum generated is immense: Cheng’s debut solo concert, titled el_ka, sold out completely within five hours of tickets going on sale, sealing her reputation as the year’s “monster rookie.”

A Sell-Out Start and an Unlikely Business Model

Cheng expressed her gratitude following the concert’s rapid sell-out, promising to dedicate “100, even 200 percent” of her effort to the performance. In a rare move that underscores the label’s faith in her artistry, the company is staging the event at a deliberate loss, prioritizing artistic growth over profit. “I feel like this is a dream that I didn’t expect to come true this year,” she shared.

An Unprecedented Lyricist Lineup

What truly differentiates Cheng’s debut from other idol-to-solo transitions is the roster of wordsmiths on her songs. Her team successfully united the three heavyweights of Hong Kong songwriting: Wyman Wong, Lin Xi, and James Jat-wai Chow.

Wyman Wong contributed the track Brainwashing Song, produced by Stephen Shum, which has already sparked arena-wide singalongs during flash performances. Chow wrote Blocked, a sharp analysis of modern social and emotional boundaries. The fourth single, Unfirm, showcases Cheng’s expanding range. Lin Xi is currently crafting her highly anticipated fifth single, completing the trio’s contributions.

Cinema Meets Pop: The Making of Paper House

Cheng’s latest single, Paper House, serves as the emotional core of her narrative. The title is a clever wordplay on her Cantonese nickname, “Cardboard,” and the song explores the fearless innocence of young love and the realities of living independently. Cheng told reporters the lyrics directly reflect her experience of moving out of her family home this year.

The music video was helmed by Jopy Kin-long Ho, the award-nominated director of the acclaimed film The Attorney. In the video, Cheng portrays a superhero battling monsters representing mold, dust mites, and household appliances. “This is exactly the real difficulty of just moving out on my own,” she said. “This shoot also let me experience the joy of acting for the first time.”

Symbolism and the Road Ahead

The concert’s title el_ka features an underscore, which Cheng describes as a symbol of transition. “It represents a pause and a deep breath between my group life and solo path. In computer language, it is the blinking cursor waiting to write a new page,” she explained.

With a full album promised for next year and a project roadmap extending to 2027, Cheng is building a sustainable artistic legacy. Her rapid ascent signals a powerful shift in the Cantopop landscape, demonstrating that a debut artist can command the highest level of credibility and craft right out of the gate. “Working with so many talented people and heavyweight lyricists was a huge vote of trust,” she said. “This is just the beginning.”
