Stephen Fung and Keung To Reunite for Playful Bank Ad, Poking Fun at 2024 Sea Rescue

Hong Kong superstar duo’s comedic spot turns a real-life mishap into a lesson on risk-taking and investment

HONG KONG — When actor-director Stephen Fung last teamed up with MIRROR member Keung To, they created a chart-topping music video. Now, the duo is back together—but this time, they are trading the soundstage for a seaside set, a life vest, and a script that playfully references a very public moment in Keung’s past.

The fresh promotional campaign for a major bank hit screens on Friday (21 March), featuring Fung directing and co-starring alongside the Cantopop sensation. The centerpiece: a jump-filled music video and dialogue-driven ad that sees Keung preparing to dive into the very waters where he was rescued last June.

In the clip, Fung, 50, plays the seasoned coach to Keung’s hesitant hero. “This sea is deep!” Fung warns, before adding with a smirk, “But don’t worry—I’ll be right here with you. Follow my lead.”

But Keung, 24, clad in an orange life jacket, is less than convinced. “Thanks, but before I jump—do I really have to?” he quips. “Pure diving isn’t exactly my selling point.”

Fung, playing straight man, responds: “Your English has improved.”

“Well, I’ve been in salt water before,” Keung shoots back. “Haven’t you heard my English lyrics? Want me to sing a bit?” He breaks into a playful “WOOO” before Fung cuts him off: “Okay, okay! I get it. Just show me that frustrated, scared, confident, passionate look—understand? Now jump, so we can all go home.”

The banter continues, with Keung joking about his status as a “KOL” (key opinion leader) in diving—clarifying, “I mean, when it comes to investing, I’ve already jumped in headfirst these past few years.”

Fung offers a final piece of wisdom: “Being a star is like investing. You can’t just stand on the shore. Sometimes you have to dive in, experience the ups and downs.”

Before the final plunge, Keung pauses to fix his hair: “That photo of me being pulled out last time? Not my best angle.” After a few stretches, he cannonballs into the water with dramatic splash, then grins: “Alright, let’s see what waves come my way.”

The ad is a deliberate nod to Keung’s real-life rescue in June 2024, when he fell into the sea near the Western District Wholesale Food Market and was pulled to safety by a passing boat. He was unharmed but the incident became tabloid fodder.

Now, with a wink and a splash, Keung and Fung have turned a scary moment into relatable comedy. Netizens flooded the comments, praising the pairing as an “unbeatable combo” and lauding Keung’s self-deprecating humour.

“It’s rare to see a celebrity embrace their on-screen past so playfully,” said one social media user. “The dialogue is witty, and the chemistry is gold.”

Beyond the laughs, the ad carries a subtle financial theme, framing investment as a series of calculated dives and measured risks—a metaphor Fung said fits both acting and money management.

“You can’t be afraid to get wet,” Fung said in a behind-the-scenes clip. “Whether it’s a role or a portfolio, the key is to stay afloat while embracing the unknown.”

Fans can catch the full spot across the bank’s digital platforms, with extended cuts featuring bloopers and additional banter set to roll out next week.
