Hong Kong – A new television competition blending the paranormal with prime-time entertainment premiered Saturday night, as four self-proclaimed “Black Prophets” faced off in a test of psychic prowess. The debut episode of Mystic Battle featured a high-stakes round involving a bombshell secret shared by veteran actor and television king Ruco Chan.
The first instalment, which aired on August 31, introduced the “High Intuition Group” of contestants: “Grandma” (nicknamed Phantom Moon Grandma), June (“Psychic Queen”), Ah Lam (“Mountain Wind GPS”), and Noa (“Dark Envoy”). Each was tasked with correctly identifying the details of a personal and previously undisclosed challenge in Chan’s life.
Chan, a celebrated star in Hong Kong’s entertainment industry, revealed on the show that between 2019 and 2020, he had negotiated an endorsement contract valued at an eight-figure sum. However, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented him from fully fulfilling the contract’s terms. Although the agreement did not legally require him to repay any fees, Chan said he felt a moral obligation to do so. He disclosed that he had already received two-thirds of the payment and had used that money to help purchase his mother’s first home.
“I took that money and bought the first apartment for my mom. I really wanted to return the funds to the client. I told them to give me five years, and I would slowly pay back the two-thirds,” Chan explained, stunning both the contestants and the studio audience.
The challenge tested the psychics’ ability to pinpoint not only the nature of the event but also whether it had been resolved. Among the four, Ah Lam, Grandma, and June correctly identified the core issue as a financial or contractual matter. Ah Lam further impressed the judges by specifically referencing the concept of “righteousness” or “loyalty” (yi hei in Cantonese), securing his advantage.
By the end of the two rounds, Ah Lam emerged as the clear frontrunner, scoring 272 out of a possible 300 points. Grandma finished second with 261 points. Both advanced to the next stage, while June and Noa were sent into a “border zone” for potential elimination.
Beyond the psychic competition, viewers were equally captivated by the show’s hosts. Social media buzzed with praise for Jenny Yan, a breakout host known for her sweet smile and background on the talent show The Voice of Hong Kong. Netizens celebrated her “tall, slender” figure and “love-inducing face.” Her co-host, former Miss Hong Kong contestant Rebecca Chan, also drew attention in a form-fitting black gown, with fans dubbing the pair the “tall, slim beauty squad.”
Mystic Battle airs weekly, blending entertainment with the mystique of the supernatural, as contestants compete for the title of top psychic. The series not only tests uncanny claims but also forces celebrities to share deeply personal stories, keeping audiences guessing what secret will be revealed next.
