From Birthday Party to Concert Stage
Hong Kong actor-singer Louis Koo pre-empted his 56th birthday on October 21 by hosting a party for 700 to 800 fans that evolved into a vibrant mini-concert on October 17. Despite battling his most severe illness in 26 years, Koo delivered a high-energy performance, singing over 10 classic songs and executing his iconic dance moves.
Performance Despite Health Challenges
Koo, dressed in a bold red jacket with shirt and tie, took the stage with enthusiasm. His voice was hoarse, and he revealed he was recovering from a week-long illness, his worst since filming the TV series “A Step into the Past” in 1998. The setlist included hits like “Boyfriend,” “A Man Like Me,” “Heaven’s Destiny,” and “Century’s Big Lie.” When “This Period’s Popular” played, Koo spontaneously performed his trademark “worship dance,” drawing cheers. He also covered Leslie Cheung’s songs “Black Midnight,” “Side Profile,” and “Unruly Wind.”
The fatigue from dancing left him sweating, but when fans urged him to remove his jacket, he humorously buttoned it up, joking that he had rehearsed more for this party than ever before.
Celebrity Guests and Fan Interaction
The guest list included Koo’s mother, veteran actors Lau Lan and Fung Sau, and media personality Mandy Wong. Wong posted on social media: “Thank you to Koo’s mother for inviting me to this year’s unique concert-style birthday party. We could enjoy his singing up close. Q-version dolls designed by him were on sale for HKD 388.”
During the cake-cutting, Koo expressed gratitude: “I’m very happy you all joined me for my birthday. I hope the arrangements this year satisfy everyone.”
