HONG KONG — A television personality is owning up to her exaggerated on-screen behavior after facing online criticism for an overly dramatic reaction during a reality dating show taping.
Carmen Kwan, a member of the lively “peanut gallery” panel on TVB’s dating series The Perfect Match 2, sparked negative comments from viewers after she let out a series of loud screams and animated responses upon meeting one of the show’s male participants. The contestant, Oscar Fong, is a mixed-race Chinese-Portuguese singer who works full-time as an air-conditioning technician.
After reviewing the footage, Kwan admitted her reactions went too far.
“I watched it back and I was shocked myself,” she said in a recent interview. “It was definitely over the top. I need to reflect on that.”
The outburst occurred when Fong appeared before the panel, which includes both female participants and commentators like Kwan. She described him as better looking in person than on camera.
“Many of my friends actually asked if they could get his contact to fix their air conditioners,” Kwan said with a laugh. “But I never asked for his number. He seemed a bit shy.”
Despite the backlash, Kwan expressed gratitude toward the show’s producers for the opportunity. She stated she has declined any offer to serve as a “hidden女神” — a secret female contestant — preferring to remain part of the panel instead.
“I have no intention of competing with the other women for the guys,” she said. “But if after the show someone suitable comes along, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of developing something.”
Asked about allegations that the show is scripted or that Fong was planted as a fake contestant, Kwan dismissed those claims.
“I believe the program is genuine,” she said. “Nothing feels staged.”
Personal Matters Remain Private
Kwan also addressed the recent family turmoil involving her close friend, actress Jacqueline Ch’ng, whose mother recently passed away. Reports have emerged of tensions between Ch’ng’s sisters, Candice and Winnie, over family issues.
“I received a message from her around my birthday and could tell she wasn’t in a good place emotionally,” Kwan said. “I didn’t want to disturb her. I never ask about their family business.”
Upcoming Performance
On a lighter note, Kwan is preparing to travel to Zhongshan, China, with her “twin brother” — singer and fellow performer Oscar Tam. The two are set to co-host a tour group and perform together on stage.
“I’m really looking forward to singing as siblings,” she said.
The dating show continues to air weekly, with audience reactions closely monitored by producers. Meanwhile, Kwan’s self-awareness and humility in addressing her public misstep have drawn a more sympathetic response from some viewers. Industry observers note that moments of genuine reflection can often help rebuild an entertainer’s image after online backlash.
