HONG KONG – Legendary Japanese designer Yuko Yamaguchi, the creative force behind Hello Kitty, made a rare public appearance at the Hong Kong Animation and Comic Convention on Wednesday, drawing a crowd of devoted fans including local celebrities and pop idols.
Yamaguchi, 68, who has been designing Hello Kitty for decades, held a signing session at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Among those queuing for autographs were actress Sisley Choi and members of IdG Sundae and IdG 2%, all self-proclaimed “Kitty lovers.”
Choi arrived dressed in head-to-toe pink, complete with a signature bow in her hair, carrying rare Hello Kitty handbag accessories. She secured both a signed item and a photo with the designer.
From Kitty Fan to Box Office Star
Choi’s appearance comes as her latest film, Kung Fu Women’s Football directed by Stephen Chow, continues to dominate Chinese cinemas. As of midday Wednesday, the film had crossed 1.9 billion yuan (approximately HK$2.2 billion) in cumulative box office revenue, making Choi a member of the “billion-yuan actress” club.
She downplayed the milestone, attributing the success to Chow and the entire production team. “I hope the box office can reach 3 billion, 4 billion, even 5 billion,” Choi said through an interpreter.
Choi admitted she has watched the film three times, each viewing offering a different perspective on her performance. She plays a character named “Ma Ba” in the film and expressed hope for more surprising roles in the future.
Chow’s Sequel Plans
Stephen Chow has hinted at a sequel to Kung Fu Women’s Football, and Choi confirmed she has heard about the possibility. “I’ve received messages from people saying, ‘I haven’t laughed in years, but this film made me laugh.’ That feedback is precious,” she said. “The most powerful thing about the film is the joy Chow brings. As part of it, I’m very happy.”
When asked about mixed reviews—some of which have been critical—Choi responded: “I only read the positive ones. I haven’t seen the negative comments. The film is passionate and uplifting. I even cried watching it.”
Choi also joked she would not dare to demand a pay raise, adding that other film projects and work opportunities are under discussion. She is scheduled to begin shooting a new film in September.
Going Independent and Handling Rumors
Since leaving TVB to pursue an independent career, Choi has been the subject of tabloid speculation, including unverified reports that she has been “charming” potential clients to secure work. She dismissed the claims as baseless.
“Reports are just words. They could write that I can fly,” she said. “Now I handle my own work meetings. It’s normal to talk to clients. I don’t need to charm anyone.”
When asked if the rumors bothered her, Choi said: “I focus on doing my job well. People have discerning eyes and will see how I conduct myself.”
Amid reports that Stephen Chow may be interested in signing her to his management company, Choi acknowledged that the two have had conversations. “I’ve approached him with sincerity, but I’m not sure if he feels the same,” she said.
The convention continues through the weekend, with fans expected to throng the venue for remaining appearances and exclusive merchandise.
