Hong Kong Actress Mourns Beloved Dog One Month After Loss: ‘A Hole in My Heart’

Hong Kong – Hong Kong actress and television host Siu Yee is grieving the loss of her 13-and-a-half-year-old dog, “Dai Lo Lo,” who passed away on June 23. Exactly one month later, she took to social media to share a heartfelt letter expressing deep sorrow and a lingering sense of emptiness.

In an emotional tribute posted on July 23, Siu Yee addressed her canine companion directly in a written letter. “Dear Dai Lo Lo, how are you? It has been one month since you left your mommy. Without you by my side as the little housekeeper, are you getting used to it?” she wrote. She admitted that she is still learning to cope with the loss. “I’m not used to it. There’s a bit of emptiness, a feeling like a hole has been pierced in my heart. I find myself thinking, talking, and then crying. I just want to hold you and take you to the park. I miss you so, so much.”

The actress revealed a painful inner conflict as her dog’s health deteriorated. She confessed that she had wished for the dog to pass quickly to end his suffering, but afterward felt overwhelming guilt. She also noted that Dai Lo Lo fought to stay by her side even while she was busy rehearsing for a stage play and filming a travel show in Japan. “You were so, so amazing. So incredible,” she wrote.

Siu Yee singled out June 22—the day before her dog died—as a peaceful farewell. “We spent the entire 24 hours together at home, enjoying the sunlight coming through the windows. The house smelled of you. We listened to music from Howl’s Moving Castle. I watched you rest your head on my feet as you fell asleep, then gently look up at me,” she recalled. She believes this quiet day may have been her dog’s happiest final memory. The next morning, Dai Lo Lo passed away peacefully in her arms.

The actress reflected on the profound impact of animal companionship. “With Dai Lo Lo and DeeDee, I had at least 22 years of their company. That means I’ve spent nearly half my life with dogs by my side,” she said. She described dogs as angels sent to walk among humans, urging readers to cherish their animal companions. “Please treat the dog angels that appear in your life well. You will surely be rewarded. If not… just wait and see,” she wrote.

Siu Yee’s post has resonated with many pet owners in Hong Kong, where pet ownership has risen significantly in recent years. According to a 2022 survey by the Hong Kong Animal Welfare Association, nearly 18% of households now own a dog. Veterinarians note that the average lifespan of a medium-sized dog is 10 to 13 years, making the bond often one of life’s most poignant chapters.

For those facing a similar loss, animal behavior experts recommend maintaining routines, allowing yourself to grieve, and considering memorial activities such as planting a tree or creating a photo album. Support groups and pet loss hotlines are also available in Hong Kong to help owners navigate the emotional aftermath.

As Siu Yee continues to mourn, her message serves as a tender reminder of the silent, steadfast love that animals bring into human lives—and the enduring void they leave behind.
