HONG KONG – A web of deceit, revenge, and forbidden love unravels in TVB’s latest drama Game of Spouses, as Tuesday night’s episode delivered a cascade of shocking revelations, including a friend-turned-enemy plot, a secret insurance scheme, and a heartbreaking confession from a lovelorn hero.
The episode centered on Yan Yu (Samantha Ko), who secretly purchased life insurance on her friend Snow Man (Kylie Kwok) in an attempt to transfer the misfortune of her prophetic dreams onto her. Meanwhile, Kai Wai (Jonathan Cheung) grew tired of constant criticism from Yan Yu and her colleagues, switching companies only to lose his job after offending a key client. While stuck at home, he began an affair with model Emma (Ambrosia Chan). Upon discovering the betrayal, Yan Yu orchestrated a hotel room confrontation—only for Snow Man to realize she had been manipulated all along.
The climax came when Snow Man confronted Yan Yu, accusing her of posing as an online confidante named “Terminator” and secretly urging her to marry the cheating Kai Wai. Yan Yu initially responded with cold laughter, claiming Snow Man had betrayed her first. However, her expression shifted dramatically when she learned that Snow Man was the one who pushed her into traffic—a revelation that suggests the crash was no accident.
Samantha Ko drew widespread praise for her rapid emotional transition from icy calm to genuine shock, a performance that showcased her range in a single scene. Her character’s path to vengeance was aided by Kenneth Ma‘s Ka Him, a devoted friend and secret admirer. Despite being forced into an engagement with Hiu Tung (Elaine Chan) due to family obligations, Ka Him remains hopelessly in love with Yan Yu, racing to her side whenever she needs help.
In a particularly poignant dinner scene, Ka Him, Yan Yu, Ho Yan (Matthew Ho), and Hei Yin (Yau Ka Yan) shared a meal. As the younger couple flirted openly, Ka Him and Yan Yu excused themselves, with Ka Him lamenting, “Is it really so hard to just have a simple romance?” Ma’s expression of longing and resignation reminded viewers of his legendary “36 hours of misery” look from a past TVB anniversary awards show.
Matthew Ho and Yau Ka Yan also garnered attention for their natural on-screen chemistry. Viewers praised Ho for conveying affection through subtle eye contact, vocal inflection, and pacing rather than physical intimacy. Yau revealed that the pair rehearsed extensively with the director, filming multiple takes for their kissing scenes to capture the best angles. “As professional actors, we’re not embarrassed,” she said, responding to Samantha Ko’s earlier comment about their numerous retakes.
Reflecting on her character, Yau admitted she initially felt different from the outspoken, wealthy heiress she portrays. “I’m quieter in real life,” she said. “But my friends told me I’m exactly like her—direct and wearing my heart on my sleeve.”
