Veteran Hong Kong television producer Leung Choi-yuen, affectionately known as “Choi Suk,” passed away on July 25 at age 75, sparking an outpouring of grief from actors and industry colleagues who credited him with launching and nurturing their careers.
The former senior producer and drama department manager at TVB spent nearly five decades shaping Hong Kong’s television landscape, helming iconic series including The Breaking Point, Tea is the Hometown (also known as Plain Love), and the period adventure drama Captain of Destiny.
A Mentor Remembered
Many actors who worked under Leung took to social media to share personal tributes, highlighting his reputation as a kind, approachable figure who actively mentored younger talent.
Hong Yongcheng, who starred in Captain of Destiny, posted a birthday photo with the producer. “Thank you, Choi Suk, for giving me the opportunity so many years ago,” he wrote. “You were as warm and down-to-earth as your name suggests, always willing to guide the younger generation. I am grateful for your half-century of contributions to Hong Kong’s film and television industry. I still remember celebrating birthdays together for two consecutive years.”
Yiu Tze-ling, who won a major acting award for her role as Empress Yan in Captain of Destiny, shared a script from the series. “Dear Choi Suk, I am so grateful to have been part of your works—from The Golden Faith, Ghost Writer, Twice Upon a Time, The Forgotten Legend, King Maker, Glory of the Sea, to Captain of Destiny,” she wrote. “You gave me countless acting opportunities. Because of you, my role as Empress Yan earned me the most important award of my career. I will always remember your gentle smile.”
Lasting Impressions
Fan Yik-man recalled a late-night phone call lasting nearly two hours, during which Leung discussed the next day’s shoot for The Neighbor’s Fortune, a 2019 series. “You were a photography enthusiast and promised to show me your pictures,” she wrote. “Yesterday you left us. May you rest on the lotus flower. I will continue to work hard and cherish everything.”
Crystal Leung, known for roles in Glory of the Sea, The Guardian, and Serenade of Peaceful Joy, posted a group photo. “Thank you for giving me so many great roles and opportunities over the years,” she said. “I never imagined 2022 would be the last time I saw you.”
Yuen Man-kei noted their final meeting was just three months ago, sharing a black-and-white tribute: “Choi Suk, RIP. I am grateful for the opportunities you gave me.”
