Hong Kong Stars Tackle 6K Race to Highlight Global Water Scarcity

HONG KONG – In a powerful blend of celebrity engagement and humanitarian advocacy, Hong Kong actors Carlos Chan (陳家樂) and Catherine Chau (周家怡) participated in the second annual World Vision ‘Global 6K for Water’ event today. The stars joined numerous runners to personally complete the six-kilometer circuit, aiming to simulate the arduous daily journey faced by millions worldwide to secure clean drinking water.

The initiative, held in Hong Kong, drew attention to the significant distance—approximately four miles—that women and children in developing nations often traverse carrying heavy water containers. By running the distance themselves, Chan and Chau sought to raise awareness and funds to support sustainable water projects globally.

Running for a Cause

Carlos Chan emphasized the educational aspect of the race, explaining that it provided a vital connection to the harsh realities of water poverty. He was not alone in the challenge; he proudly announced that his enthusiastic mother, a keen supporter of exercise, joined him, along with several male friends.

While focusing on the serious objective of the race, a moment of lighthearted banter between the two seasoned actors provided a human touch to the event. Chan, known for his affable nature, humorously revealed his sideline ambition for the day: playing matchmaker for his co-star, Catherine Chau.

“I brought a few male running companions along today,” Chan joked to reporters at the finish line, “but I sense you have ‘locked the gate,’ Catherine. You possess a certain aura that suggests you might not be ready.” He noted that Chau had seemingly shown no interest in engaging with his friends, even declining the chance for casual conversation.

Focus Remains on Humanitarian Mission

Catherine Chau responded in kind, acknowledging Chan’s well-intentioned efforts while admitting a lack of preparedness for romance. “I seem to have lost my antennae for meeting new people,” she quipped, confirming that Chan has always been exceptionally keen to introduce her to potential partners at various gatherings.

Chan quickly retorted with a friendly challenge, suggesting she restore her “antennae” before seeking his matchmaking services again.

Despite the jovial exchange, the core focus remained on the critical mission of World Vision’s initiative.

Water Scarcity: A Daily Reality

The Global 6K for Water underscores that access to safe water is a fundamental human rights issue. Globally, millions spend several hours each day fetching water, a chore that often prevents children, especially girls, from attending school and severely limits economic productivity.

The funds raised through this global event directly contribute to World Vision’s efforts, which include drilling boreholes, installing pumps, and implementing sanitation and hygiene programs (WASH). These interventions not only provide immediate clean water access but also ensure community ownership and long-term sustainability.

The participation of high-profile figures like Chan and Chau is crucial in leveraging their platform to bring wider public attention and financial support to the ongoing struggle for clean water access, transforming a simple six-kilometer run into a powerful statement of global solidarity. Public awareness events like this prove vital in connecting the comforts of developed cities like Hong Kong with the pressing humanitarian needs felt across the globe.
