Guangzhou, China – After decades of waiting, Hong Kong veteran singer Teresa Cheung (張德蘭) stepped onto the stage of the historic Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Guangzhou last Saturday, delivering an emotional, long-awaited debut concert on the Chinese mainland. The show, titled Teresa Cheung: Love and Loyalty Concert, was completely sold out, with fans cramming the venue to witness the iconic performer live for the first time in her career.
Cheung opened the evening with On and Off Stage, a fitting choice for a milestone performance that had been decades in the making. Addressing a packed hall, she told the audience in Cantonese: “I am truly happy and deeply moved. I have waited for this for decades. Finally, I can come to Guangzhou and meet you all for my own solo concert. Please give yourselves a round of applause—because it is your support that made this dream come true. Thank you so much. And being able to stand here, at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, makes this even more meaningful.”
The concert’s setlist marked a departure from her previous performances. Cheung paid homage to legendary lyricist Jimmy Lo by covering The Heart of a Wanderer, a classic originally penned by Lo. She also revisited two songs she famously performed at China Central Television’s Spring Festival Gala: Spring Light Beauty and Song of Blessing, which ignited the crowd’s enthusiasm.
A particularly poignant moment came when Cheung debuted a new song, Cherish Fate, with lyrics written by producer Yeung Siu-hung. Struggling to hold back tears, she told the audience: “This song moves me deeply. Life is just a few decades. Along the way, we cross paths with different people—family, friends. We have this life, but we may not have the next. We never know when someone will come or when they will leave. So we must cherish every bond we share.” The emotion was contagious, with many in the audience wiping away tears alongside her.
During the encore, Cheung performed When Will We Meet Again, the theme song from the classic TV series The Return of the Condor Heroes. She expressed profound gratitude: “Being able to sing this theme song was my luck. To have your continued support—even after I left the entertainment scene for a while—I will always remember every bit of applause and every cheer tonight. I have no way to repay you, so I will keep working hard and sing every song from my heart. I hope you will continue to support me. That alone makes me content.”
She admitted she had initially hesitated when her producer proposed a mainland tour. “I honestly didn’t know if you still remembered me. But tonight, you have proven that you still cherish me. Thank you,” she said, before closing the show with her signature ballad Love and Loyalty, bringing the Guangzhou performance to a perfect conclusion.
The concert marks a significant milestone for Cheung, whose career peaked in the 1970s and 1980s. Her successful return to the mainland stage underscores the enduring appeal of classic Cantopop and the deep emotional connection between artists and their longtime fans. No further tour dates have been announced, but industry insiders suggest the overwhelming response may lead to additional performances in other Chinese cities.
