HONG KONG – Four of Hong Kong’s most respected talents gathered in Tsim Sha Tsui on Tuesday for the press conference of the upcoming stage play Unwritten, a reunion 20 years in the making that promises to blend deep friendship with dramatic intensity.
The production brings together actor-director Joey Leung, singer-actress Ivana Wong, Koo Cho-lam, and actor Lo Chun-yip in what is being described as a long-anticipated artistic collaboration. Leung revealed he had been waiting for the right moment to work with Wong again, two decades after they first met.
“It started with a comedy where we changed costumes constantly,” Leung said. “But seeing the depth Ivana has brought to her roles in recent years, I knew it was time to write something serious for her.” True to his word, Leung crafted the script specifically for Wong, who previously won the Hong Kong Drama Awards for Best Leading Actress. “With a talent like hers, you have to give your all in the writing.”
Wong, equally excited, expressed a desire to explore dramatic territory with her old friend. “We’ve already done comedy together and played husband and wife,” she noted. “But I find Joey’s serious acting compelling. After knowing each other for 20 years, I’m curious to see how our chemistry translates into a straight drama. Every performance now feels precious—I want to create something meaningful that stays with the audience.”
When asked about a potential reunion concert with fellow singer Hins Cheung, who has previously expressed interest, Wong responded with a laugh. “I suspect he says it casually. We stay in touch, but our conversations are just everyday chit-chat—no concrete plans yet.”
For Koo Cho-lam, the role hits close to home. She plays a married woman in her 40s, wrestling with insecurity and doubt—a character she describes as “very similar to my real self.” Remarkably, Unwritten marks Koo’s first stage performance in over two decades. She admitted worrying about being the least experienced cast member until she learned it was Lo Chun-yip’s debut.
“Lo has such a cultured, intellectual look—I genuinely thought he had acted on stage before,” Koo said. Lo, for his part, confessed to nerves. His only previous stage experience was a primary school drama competition nearly 30 years ago. “People say stage acting is a rite of passage for any actor,” he explained. “I want to become a true performer, so I’m here to learn.” He added that his girlfriend, actress Liao Ziyu, has been helping him rehearse lines—an advantage he hopes will pay off.
Unwritten is set to bring together four distinctive voices, united by trust, history, and a shared commitment to the live stage—a rare gift in an era of digital distraction. As Wong put it: “The chance to share the stage with friends you’ve known for half your life is not just a performance; it’s a celebration.”
