VENICE, Italy — The 83rd Venice International Film Festival announced its official competition lineup on Tuesday, featuring 20 films vying for the Golden Lion, including new works from Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda, and celebrated playwright Martin McDonagh.
The festival, scheduled for Sept. 2-12, will open with Danny Boyle’s “Ink,” a feature that has already secured distribution through streaming giant Netflix. American actor-director Casey Affleck ventures into horror with “Company,” his third directorial effort following “Light of My Life.” Martin McDonagh, who won the festival’s Best Screenplay award for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” competes with “Wild Horse Nine,” a project shrouded in secrecy but generating significant buzz.
Honors and Jury
Actor George Clooney, 65, will receive the festival’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. The “Ocean’s Eleven” star and humanitarian has maintained a long relationship with Venice, having premiered multiple films there over his career.
