HONG KONG – A recent episode of the television drama Death Evidence has sparked widespread online discussion, as the storyline reveals a calculated murder plot involving three wealthy siblings who hired a con artist to impersonate their long-lost father—only to kill him when he demanded a larger cut of the family fortune.
The episode, which aired Tuesday night, follows the discovery of the body of “Old Wong,” a homeless man who had been reunited with the siblings just a week earlier. Forensic pathologist Zhi Xin (played by Chen Xiaohua) determines the drowning in the family’s swimming pool was suspicious. Investigator Lin Chen (played by Wei Jiaxiong) notices signs of plastic surgery on the corpse. Police Sergeant Gao Jun (played by Ma Guandong) and his team uncover that the deceased was actually Deng Rong, a career scammer who had been surgically altered to resemble the siblings’ real father. The siblings had orchestrated the identity swap to liquidate assets, but the plan unraveled when the impostor tried to renegotiate his fee.
Actor’s Tongue-in-Cheek Insults Steal the Show
Beyond the gripping plot, viewers have been particularly entertained by Wei Jiaxiong’s portrayal of the sarcastic, deadpan investigator Lin Chen. In an earlier episode, when one of the siblings, played by Xie Keyi, failed to follow legal identification procedures at the morgue, Wei’s character unleashed a series of cutting remarks delivered with a perpetual smile.
“You come in to claim a father you’ve never known, or are you hoping those bones really are your dad?” Wei’s character quipped. When a female companion complained about a strong “fishy smell” in the morgue, he shot back: “Her nose rivals a police dog—most people can’t even detect that odor.”
Online viewers praised the performance, with one writing: “This is a masterclass in how to insult someone with class.” Wei admitted in interviews that portraying such a biting character required delicate balance. “If I went too far, the audience would hate him. But we’re all professionals, so we nailed every scene without any retakes.”
Veteran Actor Shines in Dual Role
Meanwhile, 65-year-old veteran actor Mo Weiwen earned acclaim for playing two contrasting characters: the wealthy patriarch “Old Wong” and the con artist “Deng Rong.” His performance showcased a wide emotional range—from the bewildered, amnesiac father figure to the greedy, scheming impostor, and finally to a guilt-ridden man attempting to compensate his real daughter with a check.
Mo, who has been in the entertainment industry for over 40 years, has appeared in hundreds of TV dramas, stage plays, and films. He is remembered for his role as a Japanese translator in Rosy Business, where his fluent Japanese impressed audiences, and for playing a henchman to actor Xie Xian in Stephen Chow’s Shaolin Soccer. He also worked with pop star Faye Wong and Japanese actor Nakai Kiichi in the Japanese drama Love Story.
