Singer Fights Stage Four Cancer Escalation, Vows To Continue Creative Journey

Hong Kong entertainer and artist Jane Ng is facing a significant worsening of her four-year battle with Stage Four breast cancer, revealing that recent scans indicate the disease has spread to her liver. Despite the severe medical setbacks, which necessitated an emergency blood transfusion on New Year’s Eve, the singer remains fiercely determined to continue her artistic pursuits, including promoting a new song recorded during a period of relative stability.

Diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago, Ms. Ng suffered a recurrence two years ago when the malignancy metastasized and mutated, spreading to her coccyx. Her condition recently entered a critical phase, confirmed by a recent CT scan that showed a new lesion approximately three centimetres in size in her liver. Furthermore, the primary tumour in her breast has grown significantly, measuring roughly 12 centimetres, alongside noticeable enlargement of affected lymph nodes.

Speaking to Ming Pao Weekly, Ms. Ng acknowledged her increasing frailty, stating that she is now focused on “doing her best” and cherishing every moment.

Balancing Treatment Side Effects and Artistic Drive

The singer’s aggressive treatment regimen, involving hormonal and targeted drug therapies, has brought emotional and physical challenges. Ms. Ng shared that these powerful medications heavily influence her mood, leading to intense emotional swings. Her coping mechanism involves allowing the emotions to surface before engaging in self-reflection.

Amidst these arduous treatments, Ms. Ng maintained an active creative life. Last year, she courageously released her debut single, “Rebirth” (《重生》), a song reflecting her resilience, which garnered her a music award. Following its success, her production team crafted two additional songs aimed at inspiring hope and strength.

During a healthier interval, she successfully recorded the second track, titled “Love Without Tears” (《有愛無淚》). She described the new single as an upbeat and bright continuation of “Rebirth,” viewing the two songs as a conceptual two-part story.

“I am really looking forward to it,” Ms. Ng stated, expressing hopes of incorporating a dance routine into future performances of the song. “My current situation is actually deteriorating, but this hope gives me motivation.”

Hospital Stay on New Year’s Eve Highlights Severity

The physical toll of the targeted therapy drugs became evident during the last days of 2023. Ms. Ng disclosed that the medication severely suppressed her red blood cell and haemoglobin count, requiring an urgent hospital admission.

“On December 31st, I was admitted to receive two bags of blood,” she recounted. “The doctor immediately called me in because my levels were too low. So, I spent my New Year’s Eve in the hospital, but I was discharged on January 1st.” The transfusion restored some of her vigour. Consequently, doctors slightly reduced the dosage of her targeted therapy drugs as she begins her second month on the modified regimen.

Ms. Ng’s highest current priority is stabilizing her health to return to physical activities like exercise and dance, which she deeply misses. Her story highlights the profound mental and physical resilience required to manage a chronic, life-threatening illness while pursuing professional aspirations.

The continuity of her music project serves not only as a personal goal but also as an extraordinary testament to the human spirit’s ability to create and inspire even when facing the gravest of health challenges. Her commitment offers a powerful message of perseverance to others navigating complex medical journeys. Fans eagerly anticipate the release of her uplifting second track.
