HONG KONG — Two generations of Cantopop talent joined forces Tuesday night at AsiaWorld-Expo for “The Secret Between Her and Her” concert, a live performance that blended soaring vocals, unexpected reptile gifts, and raw emotion.
Canto-pop veteran Janice Vidal and rising star Gigi Yim took the stage for a high-energy set that left fans captivated by their vocal chemistry. Following the show, the pair revealed the behind-the-scenes preparation that made the collaboration possible.
Yim, 18, admitted she found Vidal’s songs technically challenging. “Her melodies are very difficult to sing, so I felt a lot of pressure at first,” Yim said. “But luckily, we started rehearsing early. She specifically arranged joint practice sessions with me—everything was well-planned and structured. That gave me peace of mind.”
Vidal praised her younger counterpart’s performance, calling their voices “a perfect match.” She also shared a quirky bonding moment: Yim received a lizard as a gift during a practice session at Vidal’s home.
“I discovered she loves reptiles, which is unusual,” Vidal explained. “Not everyone is comfortable with creatures like that. She’s a special girl—she’s not even afraid of snakes. We share the same taste.”
Tears and Unexpected Covers
The emotional peak came when Vidal performed an unplugged rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Million Reasons.” Yim said she was caught completely off guard. “I never expected her to choose that song. It moved me so much,” she recalled, noting that both artists burst into tears after their duet version years ago.
Vidal also confirmed she will return to the Hong Kong Coliseum in November for her first headlining show there in four years. She teased that the performance will feature dance numbers, which she has been rehearsing extensively.
Post-Show Plans and a Polite Apology
Yim, who showed off a toned midriff during the concert, revealed she didn’t follow a strict diet or workout regimen. “When I have a show, I lose my appetite. Eating anything makes me want to vomit,” she said. “I plan to eat a huge meal after this—a kind of violent reward for my body.”
Looking ahead, Yim mentioned she will prepare for school and hinted at an upcoming project that fans “will never expect.”
The concert coincided with a show by fellow “Voice of Dreams” alumna Chantel Yiu, and Yim confirmed they exchanged flower baskets and well-wishes.
Yim also addressed a recent slip-up during her guest appearance at Keung To’s concert. “I felt a bit bad because I messed up during the performance, but he was very kind and immediately helped me cover it,” she said. “I wrote him a sincere apology letter. I love receiving letters from fans—writing feels more heartfelt. I hope he felt my sincerity. He replied by text message.”
When asked why she called him “Mr. Keung,” Yim explained he has no English name. As for future collaborations with the popular singer, she remained open: “If the audience wants to see it, I’ll try to make it happen. If fate allows, we’ll perform together. But we need the right opportunity first.”
