MIRROR’s Jer Explores Music’s Captivating Hold in New Single ‘Magic Flute’

Jer, a lead vocalist of Hong Kong’s chart-topping group MIRROR, has released his new single, “Magic Flute,” a track that examines the irresistible power of music to enchant and control. The song brings together composer Tanya Chua, lyricist Patrick Leung, and producer Ira Wong, collaborators from Jer’s earlier works such as “JM Single 9” and “Moon Dweller.”

The inspiration for “Magic Flute” arose from a striking scene in Baz Luhrmann’s biographical film “Elvis,” where the protagonist’s leg movements, driven by the music, send the audience into uncontrolled excitement. Jer wanted to capture this commanding force, comparing it to the pull of a magical ring that seizes attention without permission. He immediately recruited lyricist Patrick Leung, praising his skill in portraying the darker, more shadowed sides of human nature. Leung’s lyrics trace a journey from the initial allure of the “chosen magic flute” that brings joy and exhilaration to lines describing the satisfaction of the soul and the opening of new sensory experiences, reflecting a gradual surrender to musical ecstasy.

Jer’s own story adds a personal layer to the single. He recalled his first busking experience, a step that required him to push past his natural shyness. “I was very timid and shy back then,” he said. “But my love for music drove me to take that first step.” He credits this leap of faith as a critical moment that ultimately paved the way for his performances on major stages.

The music video for “Magic Flute” adopts a symbolic style, with Jer embodying the essence of music itself, hidden within a flute and a cassette tape. The narrative follows a woman who, after a difficult struggle, secures the tape and uses its melodies to release her negative emotions, finding catharsis through sound. Jer noted that the inclusion of other actors made the filming process smoother, allowing the shoot to wrap up in the afternoon.

Jer has also provided insight into his upcoming work. Following the introspective “Monster on the Ground” and the resilient “Unbreakable,” he plans to release another single before the end of 2026. This future track is expected to be more accessible and mainstream in style, directly addressing the long-held wishes of his fans for something easier to connect with.

“Magic Flute” continues Jer’s focus on the intense, often manipulative hold of music, blending dark themes with melodic delivery. The single reinforces his artistic depth while hinting at a future shift toward broader appeal, signaling an engaging evolution in his musical path.
