Independent singer Marco Yip shared a personal crisis at the press conference for the 2026 Metro Radio Hits Awards, where he is competing as a solo artist for the first time. A recent fire at his mother’s grilled fish restaurant, ignited by a stove overheating, caused major damage but fortunately no injuries. “It was a miracle no one was hurt. My mother was nearby but not inside,” Yip said, visibly relieved.
The loss hits hard, especially since Yip has been self-funding his music career. “It’s painful to see my mother’s hard work suffer. I try to make her smile by singing to her,” he added, describing the events as a series of setbacks. Despite the financial strain, he remains hopeful for better times.
Yip is also stepping into acting with a cameo in the HOY sitcom “Your Security Li Baoan”, which has delighted audiences. His character, named “Songwuo Qin,” has led to playful banter about its echo of Cantopop star Zhang Kexin’s nickname. Yip denied any intended parody: “It’s just a coincidence, but I’m glad people are talking about the show.”
As he juggles personal challenges and professional ambitions, Yip’s journey reflects the ups and downs of independent artistry. With the awards on the horizon, he is focusing on gratitude and perseverance.
