HONG KONG – Hong Kong singer-songwriter Endy Chow has released a new single, “Bionic Awareness,” channeling years of reflection on artificial intelligence into a futuristic track that questions whether machines truly understand humanity or merely mimic it.
The song, which Chow wrote, composed, and arranged, marks a reunion with longtime lyricist Chiu Hak. Together with producer Goro, the team crafted a soundscape that is both electronic and introspective, deliberately contrasting cold technology with warm human emotion.
Chow revealed that he has been closely monitoring AI development for several years, but the rapid acceleration over the past year has sharpened his concerns. “Someone once pointed out that AI was supposed to handle daily chores so humans could focus on creative work,” Chow said in a statement. “But the opposite has happened. We’re still doing laundry and cooking, while technology is taking over the thinking and creating. It’s completely upside down.”
That sense of absurdity drove Chow and Chiu to write “Bionic Awareness.” The track explores a central tension: does AI genuinely understand human feelings, or is it just a sophisticated simulation? Chow is resolute in his answer. “We believe that no matter how hard AI tries to imitate, it has no flesh, no tears. When the system crashes, it becomes useless. That is exactly where humans will always surpass it.”
Despite his skepticism, Chow is not entirely dismissive of the technology. He describes his current stance as one of curiosity. Drawing a parallel to his own career, he recalled the unease he felt during the digital transition of 2007-2008. “Back then, I was anxious about music’s warmth and its future,” he explained. “Now, at this new turning point with AI, I feel more curiosity than fear. I wonder what the next chapter will be—or if life even needs to be divided into chapters at all.”
Chow’s message is ultimately humanistic. “As long as we remember we are made of flesh and blood, the future is still worth looking forward to,” he said.
The single arrives amid a broader, global conversation about AI’s impact on creative industries. From music composition to visual art and journalism, tools like generative AI are increasingly capable of producing content that rivals human output. Yet Chow’s song joins a growing chorus of artists urging caution, insisting that technology can replicate form but not the soul.
“Bionic Awareness” is now available on streaming platforms. Chow has not announced a full album or tour schedule but hinted at more thematic releases focusing on technology and identity.
