HONG KONG – Rising Hong Kong singer Chantel Yiu, known to fans simply as Chantel, says she is two weeks away from her debut solo concert and is balancing excitement with nerves as she finalizes her setlist and rehearses choreography.
Speaking on the sidelines of the “SHINE ON! Po Leung Kuk Charity Concert” on Saturday evening, the 17-year-old revealed that her biggest worry is the cover-song segment of the show. “I have to work extra hard on memorizing the lyrics,” Yiu said, adding that she has already locked in the full song list for the performance.
To show appreciation for her supporters, Yiu promised several surprises during the upcoming concert. “I will play the piano. And the outfits will feature special designs,” she explained, noting that any revealing elements would be minimal. “Even if there is less fabric, it will only expose my knees. I am working on getting in shape, but I don’t have a target weight. Being too thin doesn’t look good.”
The concert appearance comes as Yiu continues to build her career after first gaining fame as a contestant on TVB’s talent show “Stars Academy.” Her first solo concert marks a significant milestone following a series of successful singles and performances.
At the charity event, Yiu shared the stage with acclaimed singer-songwriters Terence Lam and JW Wong. She said she was thrilled to perform alongside them and openly praised Lam’s work. “I love listening to his music. His songs give people a very comfortable feeling,” Yiu said. She particularly admires Lam’s ability to single-handedly write, compose, arrange, produce, and perform his songs, calling him a role model she strives to emulate.
When asked if she hopes to invite Lam as a guest to her own concert, Yiu smiled. “Of course I hope so. Who knows? Maybe just saying it will make it happen,” she said. However, she confirmed that the guest list is already set. “I can reveal one person – a senior I’ve known for many years. He is a creator, and his English name starts with the letter ‘J.’ Let everyone guess.”
The concert, scheduled for late this month, is expected to attract a strong turnout from her growing fanbase, who have supported her through online platforms and live events. Yiu’s team has not yet announced the full lineup of special guests or the venue capacity, but tickets are reported to be selling briskly.
