Hong Kong News Anchor Program Dominates Weekly Television Ratings

A weekly analysis of television viewership in Hong Kong revealed that an information program secured the top spot in the ratings chart for the period spanning May 19 to May 25, 2024, according to newly released data from CSM Media Research and YOUBORA. The long-running lifestyle and current affairs segment, Scoop, peaked with a cross-platform live broadcast rating of 22 points, translating to an audience of approximately 1.42 million viewers, demonstrating the enduring popularity of news-focused content.

The ratings surge also highlighted strong performances from a new legal drama and several weekend programs. The debut of the new series, The Inherited Justice, featuring actors Joe Ma, Arnold Ng, and Winki Lai, achieved the highest rating among all three main dramas shown, hitting 19.7 points, or about 1.27 million viewers. This placement put the drama notably ahead of the popular situation comedy, Lo and Behold, which recorded a peak of 18.6 points (1.20 million viewers). An imported drama series, The Hostage Contract, meanwhile, trailed with 15.3 points (980,000 viewers).

Weekend Programming Experiences Significant Ratings Gains

Weekend programming on the Jade channel saw widespread gains in viewership. On Sunday, the second season of the singing competition Midlife, Sing! hosted by Stephanie Che and Derek Cheng, recorded a peak of 19.7 points (1.27 million viewers)—a 0.6-point increase from the previous week. This figure placed it nearly level with the top-rated new drama, showcasing the broad appeal of local talent competitions.

Furthermore, the documentary series No Limits V—Infinite Journey, which delves into compelling travel narratives, saw the most substantial week-over-week growth, climbing 2.6 points to reach a high of 15.9 points (1.03 million viewers). The comedic review series Movie Watcher, also enjoyed a significant boost, rising 2.4 points to 12.7 points (820,000 viewers).

A diverse lineup of new shows also saw successful premieres. The launch of the renovation program Home Reshape, presented by Sammy Leung and Hilary Chong, debuted strongly on Saturday with 17.7 points (1.14 million viewers), marking a 1-point increase for its time slot.

New Interactive Game Show Earns Solid Launch

The television landscape continues to incorporate interactive elements, evidenced by the debut of a new music-themed interactive game show, Cash Song. Premiering on Saturday night, the program, hosted by Sammy Leung, Eric Kwok, and Plan V member Eunice Lee, secured a respectable rating of 16 points (1.03 million viewers). Singer Sheldon Ng served as the first guest “Trial Commissioner,” suggesting that the inclusion of celebrities is a key strategy for driving initial engagement.

The viewing data underscores a dual popularity trend: while daily information programs like Scoop retain their massive, dependable audience base, new investments in high-production drama and variety programming—particularly dynamic weekend lineups and reality formats—are successfully capturing increased viewer attention and delivering key incremental gains necessary to maintain market leadership in a competitive digital media environment. The results confirm that strategic programming diversification across weekdays and weekends is paramount for maximizing audience reach in the current television ecosystem.
