Fatherhood and Child Safety Take Center Stage at Hong Kong Charity Event

HONG KONG – A press conference for the Yan Oi Tong charity gala today gathered a cross-section of Hong Kong entertainers, including actor Tam Sin-yin, actress Kong Mei-yee, and actor Chu Man-hon. The event quickly shifted from playful celebrity banter to sincere reflections on parenting, offering a glimpse into the private lives of the stars while addressing a recent public debate over child welfare.

On stage, Kong Mei-yee playfully instructed Chu Man-hon to reveal an eight-pack during the upcoming gala. Chu later joked to reporters that he might not deliver, offering her a “two-pack” instead—a pun on a HK$200 gesture. The two currently co-host the variety show Si Chun D Yo, which Kong confirmed producers are considering reviving for a third season. She encouraged audiences to submit suggestions for filming locations.

Tam Sin-yin provided the event’s more serious moments. Rushing to pick up his daughter from school after the press conference, he noted that she recently took up basketball and received sportswear sponsorship from actress Wingyan Lau’s own brand, reflecting the tight relationships within Hong Kong’s entertainment scene.

Tam also weighed in on a widely discussed news story about a young girl purchasing 24 cans of beer. While emphasizing he had not followed the specific case and could not comment directly, he was unequivocal about the principle. He argued that children should never have access to alcohol, tobacco, or any age-restricted product, describing the act of providing such items to a minor as carrying an element of abuse.

Drawing a clear contrast, he noted that he regularly takes his own children grocery shopping. They often volunteer to carry heavy bags—a routine he sees as a healthy lesson in responsibility, sharply different from exposing children to restricted substances.

Yan Oi Tong, one of Hong Kong’s established charitable bodies, funds a wide array of community services ranging from education to elderly care. The annual gala serves as a major fundraising driver for these initiatives.

The blend of celebrity humor and sincere parenting insight gave the press conference a broad emotional appeal, connecting star power with the everyday challenges of Hong Kong families. The gala is expected to carry this momentum forward, using entertainment as a platform to reinforce messages of social responsibility.
