Chan Ka Lok Reveals Filming Hardships with Swear Words and Risky Stunts in ‘The Scavenger’

Hong Kong actors Chan Ka Lok, Tang Yee, Zhang Wenjie, and Wu Bing recently detailed the grueling filming conditions of their upcoming movie ‘The Scavenger’ during a promotional interview, highlighting extensive profanity, risky fight choreography, and emotionally demanding roles.

Profane Language and Health Fears

Chan Ka Lok’s character in ‘The Scavenger’ is impulsive and superstitious, often clashing with his forensic doctor girlfriend played by Tang Yee. The role involved the most swear words Chan has ever used in his career, with the director actively encouraging profanity to enhance the character. Filming took place in unsanitary locations like mountains, ruins, and drains, which raised concerns for Chan, as his wife Joey Leung was pregnant at the time. He feared bringing home bacteria that could affect her and their unborn daughter. Chan described feeling disgusted with himself and would immediately shower upon entering his house before interacting with his family.

Emotional Turmoil for a Real-Life Mother

Tang Yee’s character decides to terminate her pregnancy, causing significant tension with Chan’s character. As a mother in real life, Tang found this role emotionally challenging. She stated that she had to channel her own maternal instincts to convey the heartbreak. Tang had previously acted with Chan in romantic roles but appreciated the opportunity to express anger this time. Chan humorously noted that Tang Yee’s naturally serious demeanor was perfect for the role, as she rarely smiled, leading him to joke about her being difficult to read.

Dangerous Action in Filthy Environments

Chan and Zhang Wenjie performed several action sequences together. Chan asserted that he could match Zhang’s fighting skills in these scenes. A particularly dangerous scene involved a drain where water levels rose from ankle to waist deep due to heavy rain. The strong current made it hard to stay upright, and the water hid rocks and glass. Chan credited his trust in Zhang Wenjie for their successful collaboration. Zhang highlighted a stunt where actress Josie Ho rode on his shoulders. He managed it without issues, but the dirty set required him to shower two to three times after filming.

Wu Bing’s First Ghost Role

Wu Bing tackled her first ghost character in this film. She used white makeup to get into character, which helped her immerse in the role. Despite her usual cheerful personality, she found it difficult to maintain a straight face and avoid laughing during serious scenes.

Broader Impact

The challenges faced by the cast demonstrate the physical and emotional dedication required in Hong Kong cinema. ‘The Scavenger’ aims to offer an authentic and gritty experience, pushing the boundaries of immersive storytelling. This trend toward realism may continue to shape future productions, emphasizing the sacrifices actors make to bring compelling stories to life.
