At 50, Cantopop Veteran Lau Ho Lung Returns to Stage, Embraces Single Life

Hong Kong singer Lau Ho Lung, 50, revealed his musical rebirth at the launch ceremony for the Cantonese Song Culture Festival 2026. After years of prioritizing film work, he rediscovered his vocal abilities with the help of a coach introduced during the pandemic, culminating in a successful solo concert in August. He also announced upcoming international tour dates with fellow singer Siu Fei and shared candid reflections on his content single lifestyle.

Finding His Voice Again

Lau explained that while focusing on acting projects, his singing practice suffered. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Siu Fei connected him with vocal coach Guddy Chen, who transformed his approach. “Guddy acted like a personal trainer, guiding me step by step,” Lau said. “He helped me find my own voice again and rebuild my confidence, which made the August concert possible.”

This collaboration proved pivotal. Lau dedicated months to rebuilding technique under Chen’s supervision, resulting in what he described as a long-awaited return to his musical foundation.

Tour Plans and Community Touch

Looking ahead, Lau is partnering with Siu Fei for a December concert in Toronto, with a Macau stop scheduled for next year. To connect with local audiences, his team will launch an online contest inviting children to design tour posters featuring regional icons. For the Macau leg, for example, young artists can submit drawings of the signature pork chop bun.

Lau also expressed strong interest in expanding to mainland China, saying it remains a significant career goal.

Life at 50: Freedom over Romance

Now in his fifth decade, Lau said he has no interest in dating or matchmaking. He noted that friend Lam Shing Bun has attempted to set him up five or six times, but Lau declined every invitation. “I’ve probably disappointed him greatly,” he said with a laugh. “Many of my married friends envy my freedom—I can do whatever I want without worrying about getting drunk or needing permission.”

He stressed that he avoids blind dates and feels no pressure to settle down. His criteria for a potential partner are simple: strong communication and comfort, not physical appearance. Like his friend Alex Fong, who married and had a daughter suddenly, Lau believes love will happen naturally when the time is right.

Broader Implications

Lau’s openness about prioritizing career and personal autonomy at 50 reflects shifting attitudes among veteran entertainers. His journey from vocal stagnation to a triumphant comeback demonstrates that artistic growth remains possible at any stage. By embracing local communities through creative contests and expressing ambitions for mainland audiences, he signals a thoughtful approach to sustaining relevance in a competitive industry.

As he prepares for tour stops in North America and Macau, Lau Ho Lung continues to carve his own path, proving that fulfillment often comes from doing things on one’s own terms.
