Taiwanese superstar Show Luo brought laughter and star power to a Hong Kong charity telethon on Tuesday night, delivering a high-energy performance and a memorable language mishap that endeared him to the audience.
Hong Kong, October 17 – Taiwanese pop icon Show Luo (also known as Xiao Zhu) took the stage as the opening act for the TVB charity program “善心滿載仁愛堂” (Full of Kindness for the Yan Oi Tong), performing his upbeat hits “高調愛” (High Profile Love) and “有點愛” (A Little Love). However, it was his post-performance attempt at Cantonese that stole the show.
Addressing the crowd in heavily accented Cantonese, the Mandopop star expressed his commitment to the cause. “I am Show Luo. In November, I received an invitation from Yan Oi Tong… I will definitely fly over to show my support,” he said, his words drawing a chuckle from one of the event’s hosts, Karl Ting. Ting jokingly admitted, “The only thing I understood was ‘definitely come and support Yan Oi Tong.'”
Ever the entertainer, Luo shot back with a playful grin: “Why do you need to translate? My Cantonese is very good!” The lighthearted banter set a relaxed tone for the evening.
Later, Luo explained that he had carefully selected his opening medley to inspire generosity. He expressed a hope that the songs would encourage everyone to have more love and become “慈善家” (philanthropists). But in a hilarious twist, his Cantonese failed him, and the word came out as “黐線㗎” (a slang term for “crazy”).
His co-host, Tiffany Lau, was quick to seize the comedic moment, joking, “Oh! We’re all crazy!” The team of emcees burst into laughter before gently correcting him. A flustered Luo immediately apologized, repeatedly saying, “Sorry! Sorry! Philanthropist! Philanthropist!” He capped off the moment with a deep bow, covering his face in mock embarrassment.
A Star’s Commitment to Charity
The gala, a staple of Hong Kong’s philanthropic calendar, aims to raise significant funds for Yan Oi Tong’s various community services, including elderly care, youth development, and family support. Luo’s participation highlights the growing cross-border appeal of such events, drawing in fans from across the region to support local causes.
Despite the linguistic stumble, Luo’s appearance was a resounding success, proving that a good-natured sense of humor can transcend language barriers. His willingness to embrace the local dialect, even imperfectly, won him praise from fans and fellow performers alike, reinforcing his reputation as a charismatic and down-to-earth star. The evening’s funds raised are slated to support the charity’s ongoing operations throughout the coming year.
