A roster of Hong Kong entertainers, including 鍾鎮濤 (Ah B), 鄺美雲, and 劉錫明, performed Tuesday at the Hong Kong Coliseum for a gala marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The concert blended veteran acts with rising stars, offering audiences an evening of nostalgia and new collaborations.
The most anticipated reunion was between Ah B and 鄺美雲, who had not performed together in 36 years. Once labelmates, their last duet was the 1988 ballad “Still Thinking of You.” Their latest collaboration, “We Are a Family,” marked a fresh start. Ah B joked that he had nearly forgotten she was a singer but praised her enduring professionalism, noting that her vocal control, stage presence, and chemistry remain intact. When asked if he would persuade friend Alan Tam (譚詠麟) to reverse his decision to stop headlining at the Coliseum, Ah B declined. “He makes his own choices. He doesn’t easily take advice, and I respect his decision,” he said.
鄺美雲 expressed joy at singing with Ah B again but made clear she has no plans to return to pop music. She now sings only occasionally, such as at karaoke.
Another standout was 劉錫明’s performance of “Today Is Your Birthday.” Backed by his 23-year-old daughter and niece, he admitted going first on stage left him sleepless with anxiety. Now based in mainland China, he continues acting and singing. He revealed a film project with his daughter where they will portray a grandfather and granddaughter, with his character aging from 40 to 80. He embraces the role, insisting actors should not limit themselves. Personally, he said he is in no rush to become a grandfather but will not interfere with his daughter’s relationships. He hopes to find a manager to help launch her career in Hong Kong. As for his own Coliseum concert, he said it hinges on public demand.
Intergenerational Appeal
The gala also featured emerging talents 洪卓立, 許靖韻, 戴祖儀, and 林智樂, showcasing the breadth of Hong Kong’s music scene. The mix of veteran and new artists highlighted the industry’s evolution while honoring its foundations.
Cultural Impact
Events like this not only commemorate national milestones but also strengthen cultural ties across generations. They offer veterans a chance to rediscover old partnerships and rising stars a platform to learn from established names. The evening closed with a sense of unity, blending tributes to the past with optimism for the future. For the artists involved, it served as both a career milestone and a reminder of music’s role in connecting people.
