Hong Kong stars help wheelchair-bound fan achieve K-pop dancing ambition in heartfelt debut episode
Hong Kong – A new ViuTV reality programme is tugging at heartstrings before its first episode even airs tonight, as two celebrity hosts help a young woman with muscular atrophy realise her long-held wish to dance — using stop-motion animation and an all-star fashion team. “Yan Yau Help You” (《沿路幫緊你》) premieres Monday through Friday at 10:30 PM, with actresses Jennifer Yu and Lok Yi “Ah Mui” leading the first mission.
The debut episode centres on Bun Lam, a returning figure from the show’s first season, who enlists the hosts to fulfil her best friend Fish’s dream. Fish, who like Bun Lam uses a wheelchair due to muscular atrophy, has long loved K-pop and aspired to dance in South Korea — but her physical condition made that impossible. Moved by their shared experience, Bun Lam turned to the programme team for help.
The opening scenes set a light-hearted tone: Yu and Ah Mui arrive at Bun Lam’s home bearing a “healthy breakfast” as a gift, only to be playfully teased for its bland taste — “Did you even add salt?” Bun Lam joked. When asked how she would react if Ian Chan of boy band Mirror prepared the meal, she laughed: “Then it’d be sweet, of course!” Yu, herself a self-confessed Ian fan, marvelled at Bun Lam’s collection of the singer’s merchandise: “This house is full of Ian — I love it!”
The emotional weight deepens when the trio visits Fish, whose mother has been her primary caregiver since birth. In candid conversations, the hosts learn of the immense, unrelenting worry the mother has carried for over two decades. Yu, herself a mother of two, grew visibly moved: “As a mum, I thought — this woman is so strong, so remarkable.” Ah Mui echoed the sentiment: “She speaks about it so matter-of-factly, but you can only imagine the endless worry from Fish’s birth to her twenties.”
Rather than dwell on limitation, the team pivoted to creativity. Recognising Fish’s physical limits, Yu and Ah Mui decided to bring her dance to life using stop-motion animation, crafting a dedicated on-screen performance just for her.
The surprise didn’t end there. The programme team secured a special appearance by Leo Ku, a singer Bun Lam has idolised since childhood. When approached, Ku not only agreed to appear but insisted on going further — recruiting his long-time collaborator, renowned costume designer Kenneth Chan, to craft a stage outfit for Fish. Ku explained: “They told me they wanted to surprise Fish at the screening. But I thought — she needs a proper stage costume. Let’s call in my friend to help.”
Chan, known for dressing numerous Cantopop icons, accepted without hesitation: “The story touched me deeply. I’m so glad you’re helping her fulfil this dream.”
The episode weaves together lighthearted banter and poignant reflection, underscoring the programme’s central theme — that small acts of kindness can transform lives. Beyond the narrative, it also spotlights the daily realities of people with disabilities in Hong Kong, where accessibility and representation in entertainment remain limited.
