Hong Kong singer Day (許軼), a member of the popular girl group COLLAR, has released a new ballad titled “When You Left Me, Something Magical Happened” — a raw, emotional track designed to reframe the pain of heartbreak into a story of resilience and self-discovery.
The song, which marks Day’s first foray into slow, melancholic ballads, aims to offer solace to those struggling with romantic loss. “After a breakup, you’re bound to feel sad — at first, you might feel completely wrecked,” Day said in a statement. “But as time passes, everyone eventually gets through the rough patch on their own. I want this song to heal people who are hurting, to show them that heartbreak doesn’t have to be just about devastation — there’s another way to face it.”
The music video, released alongside the single, takes a cinematic approach by weaving its narrative into the storyline of another MV — that of singer AK (江𤒹生). Day invited AK to play the male lead, and the two projects are connected in a shared universe. “I wanted the video to have a stronger storyline,” Day explained. “I had already planned to ask AK to play the lead, and coincidentally, he was releasing his own new song, so the connection worked out perfectly.”
In the MV, Day portrays a woman freshly heartbroken and trying to flee her past. She meets AK’s character, who begins to pursue her — but the ending remains deliberately ambiguous. The role of her ex-boyfriend is played by亨仔 (陳鎮亨), a stark physical contrast to AK. “The director wanted someone with a completely different look from AK,” Day recalled. “I remembered that亨仔 had just won a bodybuilding competition, and to make use of his impressive physique, we asked him to play the muscular ex.”
Despite being surrounded by two handsome co-stars on set, Day revealed her real fascination lay with a small gecko. In the story, AK’s character owns a gecko that Day’s character cares for. While AK is genuinely afraid of the reptile in real life — leading to comic moments during filming — Day found the creature adorable. “I actually wanted to include a gecko before we even started shooting,” she said. “When the director showed me a photo of the one we’d use, I fell in love instantly — it matched exactly what I had imagined.”
When asked if she fears anything, Day laughed: “I’m scared of dinosaurs and crocodiles, so I’m not completely fearless.”
The most challenging scene, Day admitted, required her to eat while crying — a deeply vulnerable, everyday moment that demanded raw emotion. “The biggest struggle was actually my own appearance anxiety — worrying whether I’d look ugly while crying,” she confessed.
The single and its connected MV represent a growing trend in Cantopop where artists use cross-referenced storytelling to deepen fan engagement. For Day, the song’s message is clear: healing is possible, and heartbreak can be the start of something unexpectedly magical.
