HONG KONG — Nearly two decades after his passing, the legacy of Cantopop legend Leslie Cheung continues to shine. On Saturday evening, a sold-out tribute concert marking what would have been his 70th birthday will light up the West Kowloon Cultural District, combining live performances from 16 artists with a choreographed drone display of 1,956 aircraft — a nod to Cheung’s birth year.
Organized by Tianxing Entertainment, “Forever Leslie: The 70th Birthday Concert” takes place at AXA Anson Wai Bamboo Park. Producer Florence Chen, the company’s president, told local media she feels “deeply grateful” as months of planning have culminated in a show she believes will offer fans a meaningful, shared experience.
All tickets for the outdoor event have been sold out. Rehearsals are underway, with performers unified by a single mission: to gather with love, sustain remembrance, and deliver an impeccable tribute to Cheung, affectionately known by fans as “Brother Gor.”
The lineup includes an array of Hong Kong music and film icons: Karen Mok, Sam Hui, Dicky Cheung, Niki Chan, Ian Chan, Elisa Chan, Lok Yin Law, Hei Hei Fung, Eva Yan Min-fong, Michael Tse, Kenny Bee, Chung Yi, Yan Mi-gao, William So, and Patrick Tam.
A signature element of the evening will be the drone show, timed specifically for 9:12 p.m. — referencing Cheung’s birth date, September 12. The 1,956 drones will form various anniversary-themed patterns in the sky. Chen noted that the number 1,956 holds special significance for fans, as it represents Cheung’s year of birth. The flight team has conducted rehearsals over Bamboo Park, refining the formations to ensure precision.
“We hope that on this Saturday night, all who love Brother Gor can share an unforgettable evening together,” Chen added.
Cheung, who died in 2003 at age 46, remains one of Asia’s most beloved entertainers, known for hits like “Monica” and “Farewell My Concubine.” His influence endures across generations, and events like this continue to draw devoted crowds.
