HONG KONG — A constellation of Hong Kong celebrities, including actor-singer Jeffrey Ngai, model Louise Wong, and the all-female music group MYNT, gathered at a fashion event in Tsim Sha Tsui on Monday night. The showcase highlighted local designer collections and offered a glimpse into the stars’ personal style ambitions and health journeys.
Ngai, known for his rising profile in film and music, revealed that fashion has long been a passion. “I’ve always been interested in fashion,” he said. “My dream is to build my own clothing brand one day.” The actor recounted a recent encounter with pop diva Sammi Cheng, noting he purposely addressed her as “Sister Sammi” rather than the more formal “Senior Sammi.” “We hadn’t seen each other in a long time. She told me I’d lost a lot of weight. I asked if I looked better—she didn’t answer. It was a short meeting, so we didn’t get to talk about working together.”
When asked whether he agrees with public praise for Cheng’s recent fuller figure, Ngai emphasized health over appearance. “The most important thing is being healthy,” he said. “When I was filming, I got so thin that people worried about me. Lately, I’ve taken up swimming. In the pool, everyone wears caps and goggles, so no one recognizes me—I can just focus.”
MYNT members attended wearing designs from different Hong Kong labels. Member Niki Nip said the experience felt transformative. “Suddenly we felt very fashionable—it’s a totally different feeling from wearing our group outfits,” she remarked. Fellow member Chantel Chong admitted she has considered starting her own fashion brand with friends. “But the capital needed is huge,” she said. “I have to work hard and save money first before launching it.”
The event also drew commentary from former Miss Hong Kong winners. Regarding recent criticism that newly crowned winner Ava Yuan was less attractive than professional news anchors, 2022 winner Denise宋宛穎, 2023 winner Hilary莊子璇, and 2021 winner Nicole倪樂琳 defended her. “Every year, people say the winner isn’t pretty enough,” said one. “Beauty is subjective. We think she is beautiful—and she has both beauty and intelligence.”
Separately, singer Alex Lam revealed he developed “mother’s wrist” from carrying his daughter excessively and has turned to traditional Chinese medicine for treatment. He expressed a desire for a son but said he is leaving it to fate.
The evening underscored how Hong Kong’s entertainment figures are balancing public scrutiny with personal wellness and entrepreneurial dreams, while championing local fashion talent. For Ngai, the next step may be turning his longtime dream into reality—after a few more laps in the pool, perhaps.
