Hong Kong Host Stephen Leung Wins Major Asian Television Award in Indonesia

Veteran Hong Kong television personality Stephen Leung Si-ho secured a significant international honor at the 30th Asian Television Awards (ATA) in Indonesia, becoming the sole Hong Kong recipient at the ceremony held on November 29. Leung’s hosting role in the Malaysian television program, Superpower Academy, earned the show a win in the highly competitive Best Variety Program category, triumphing over seven other nominated programs from across the Asian region. This achievement follows actress Charmaine Sheh’s win at the same awards show last year, further cementing Hong Kong talent recognition on the regional stage.

Leung, who attended the event in a modestly colored suit alongside his production team, used his acceptance speech to deliver a heartfelt message in Cantonese. “Tonight, I want to use Cantonese to thank everyone, especially the cast and crew of Superpower Academy,” he stated. He then extended his well wishes to victims of the recent blaze in Tai Po, Hong Kong, urging the community to “Keepthe faith and press on.”

Solidarity Through Tragedy and Generosity

The emotional atmosphere surrounding the awards night was intensified by recent events back home. Leung revealed backstage that the ceremony, involving representatives from over a dozen nations, observed a moment of silence for those affected by the Hong Kong tragedy. He expressed deep gratitude for the gesture, noting the moving impact of the audience’s applause when he publicly addressed the disaster victims upon receiving his award.

Originally planning a celebratory banquet for the production team upon his return to Hong Kong, Leung announced that the festivities had been canceled due to the fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, which dampened the team’s spirit. Demonstrating their commitment to the affected community, Leung confirmed a significant donation: “We will allocate the entire cost of the planned six-table celebration dinner toward the Tai Po disaster victims to express our sincere support.”

A Chance Encounter with a Long-Time Colleague

Beyond the accolades, the ATA ceremony provided a moment of personal significance for Leung. He was visibly delighted to reconnect with long-time friend and colleague, Daniel Chan Tze-chung, backstage. Leung noted Chan’s excellent physical appearance and strong health, stating that the actor “looked entirely restored.” Chan, who appeared rejuvenated, was present at the event as a presenter for the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories, marking a reunion for the two industry figures who have known each other for over two decades.

The win for Superpower Academy not only highlights Leung’s enduring appeal as a host but also underscores the growing cross-border collaboration within the Asian television industry. The ATA, now in its 30th year, remains a key platform for recognizing excellence in regional broadcasting, reflecting diverse talents and production innovation across Asia. Leung’s commitment to both professional achievement and community support resonates strongly with audiences globally.
