Record-breaking heat has pushed global average temperatures more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels for an entire year, marking the first time the critical climate benchmark has been exceeded over such a sustained period. The milestone, confirmed by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, underscores the accelerating pace of planetary warming and raises urgent questions about the world’s ability to avert the worst impacts of climate change.

What the Data Reveals

According to data released Wednesday, the 12-month period ending in February 2024 was 1.56°C warmer than the average temperatures recorded between 1850 and 1900, the standard pre-industrial baseline. February 2024 itself was the hottest February on record, with global air temperatures averaging 13.54°C—around 0.81°C above the 1991-2020 average for the month.

The findings come from a comprehensive analysis of satellite observations, weather station readings, and ocean buoy data. Experts note that while the 1.5°C threshold is the aspirational target set by the 2015 Paris Agreement, that accord refers to a long-term average over decades, not a single year. However, the sustained breach is seen as a deeply troubling signal.

“We are in unknown territory,” said Dr. Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service. “This is a stark warning that the impacts of climate change are not a distant future scenario—they are here, now, and they are becoming more severe.”

Why This Year Is Different

Scientists attribute the exceptional warmth to a combination of factors. The dominant driver remains humanity’s relentless emission of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial agriculture. Carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere have risen to levels not seen in at least 4 million years.

Compounding this long-term trend, a powerful El Niño event—a natural climate pattern characterized by warming of the Pacific Ocean—released additional heat into the atmosphere, pushing temperatures even higher. Although El Niño is now weakening, its lingering effects are expected to keep global temperatures elevated for months.

“Even if El Niño fades, we are still on a warming trajectory because the underlying cause—fossil fuel emissions—continues,” cautioned Dr. Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London.

Human and Economic Toll Already Evident

The 1.5-year breach is not merely a statistical anomaly; it has direct, tangible consequences. Extreme weather events linked to warmer conditions have intensified across the globe:

The findings place renewed pressure on governments and industries ahead of the next UN climate conference, COP29, set for November in Baku, Azerbaijan. Analysts say current policies are insufficient to meet the Paris goals.
