HONG KONG — Cantopop singer Jay Fung and fellow artist Cloud Wan traded affectionate nicknames onstage Tuesday night during a performance at the “叱咤903星空下” concert, but both admitted they rarely use the term “BB” (baby) in their personal relationships.
Fung, who performed alongside Wan and singer Lam Yik Chi at the event organized by Commercial Radio Hong Kong, sparked audience cheers when he referred to Wan as “Cloud BB” during their duet. The playful gesture, however, came with an explanation.
“Cloud calls me ‘Jay BB’ all the time, so I’m just returning the favor,” Fung told reporters after the show. “But honestly, when I address my girlfriend, I just say ‘hey.’ I’ve never called her ‘BB.’”
Wan, visibly taken aback by the onstage moniker, confirmed that the pet name was a departure from her usual routine. “I was a bit surprised when he said it,” she said. “My boyfriend doesn’t call me ‘BB’ either. Everyone usually calls me ‘Ah Wan.’”
The concert appearance came during a busy period for Fung, who said he has been grappling with fatigue and a hoarse voice after wrapping up his first all-English song concert. “I haven’t been sleeping well because of work, and my voice is still recovering,” he said. “But I’m very grateful to my company for helping me fulfill my dream of doing an English show.”
Looking ahead, Fung said he plans to focus on producing Cantopop music and writing songs for other artists. He revealed that he has already composed an upbeat track for Wan, though she has not yet set a release date. Wan expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration but added a gentle request: “I’ll definitely use it later, but what I really hope for is a slow ballad from Jay.”
The evening also touched on the rumored return of Joyce Cheng, the popular Hong Kong singer who has been absent from the public eye. Fung recalled a chance encounter with Cheng last year. “We ran into each other on the street,” he said. “I really hope she can return to the stage. I believe many people miss her voice and are looking forward to hearing more great songs from her.”
Fung’s comments reflect a broader sentiment among local music fans, who have been speculating about Cheng’s comeback since she stepped away from the spotlight.
As Hong Kong’s live music scene continues to rebound, events like Tuesday’s concert offer a platform for established and emerging artists to connect with audiences. For Fung and Wan, the night was also a reminder that even stars have boundaries when it comes to sweet talk.
