HONG KONG – The fourth season of the hit singing competition “Midlife Voice” (中年好聲音4) is set to air its second “Original Night” round this Sunday, Jan. 26, featuring a star-studded lineup of guest judges and duet pairings that have already generated buzz among fans and contestants alike.
The episode, which determines contestants’ cumulative ranking scores, will welcome veteran musician Kenny Bee as a guest judge, alongside iconic actors Michelle Yim and Shek Sau, who will serve as “music connoisseurs.” The show’s remaining 10 finalists will each team up with one of 10 established singers to perform classic hits from the artists’ own repertoires.
Beyond the competition’s prestige, this season offers tangible rewards: the champion will receive HK$100,000, while the first and second runners-up will take home HK$50,000 and HK$30,000, respectively.
Duets Spark Emotional Highlights
One of the most anticipated pairings features contestant Chow Chi Hong and singer Kelvin Kwan, who will perform Kwan’s hit “You Treat Me as What.” Chow revealed that the pair have known each other for years, adding that Kwan’s approachable demeanor helped him relax on stage. Kwan noted he has never performed the song as a duet before and expressed excitement about chasing a high score together.
Their heartfelt delivery earned strong praise from judge Cheung Tim Tim, who remarked on the duo’s immediate stage presence. Fellow judge Hoi Yi was overheard exclaiming “handsome,” but later clarified she was referring to Chow’s styling ensemble. Chow Kwok Fung observed that Kwan successfully encouraged Chow to open up emotionally, bringing the passion the song demands.
Broadway-Style Performance Wins Over Audience
In another standout moment, Hui Wan Ni and Lau Nga Lai delivered a theatrical rendition of “You for Love.” Lau’s rich, mellow voice blended seamlessly with Hui’s slightly raspy and emotive tone. The pair presented the song in a Broadway musical style, drawing thunderous applause.
Veteran judge Maria Cordero praised Hui’s refreshed performance, while Chow Kwok Fung noted that Hui appeared more relaxed under Lau’s guidance. Hoi Yi likened the act to watching the musical film Burlesque. Even Michelle Yim joined the banter, joking, “I’m a little jealous—you never had this many moves when you sang with me.”
Retro Throwback and Stylish Duo
Contestant Yau Suk Ching and singer Wong Bo Yan revived a 1980s-1990s classic with their duet of “I’m Your Friend, I’m Your Lover.” Despite the song’s fast tempo and demanding enunciation, the pair sang and danced without losing breath control, earning unanimous praise from Kenny Bee, Maria Cordero, and Cheung Tim Tim.
“She really captured Wong Bo Yan’s essence,” Cordero said. Bee added, “They had great chemistry and successfully recreated the vibe of that era.”
Meanwhile, Chan Yuk Pui and Hubert Wu performed “Too Hard to Begin” in matching powder-blue outfits, impressing with their seamless coordination.
