HONG KONG – An unexpected power outage briefly halted the fifth night of Canto-pop star Keung To’s ongoing concert series at the AsiaWorld-Expo on Saturday, forcing organizers to cancel a scheduled stage stunt but failing to dampen the spirit of the performer or the audience.
The incident occurred suddenly during the show, requiring a swift technical intervention. While engineers rapidly restored power, safety protocols necessitated the immediate suspension of the elaborate crane performance segment. Despite the technical disruption, the show resumed, featuring a highly anticipated duet that offered a candid glimpse into the personal struggles and spiritual journey of the popular singer.
Star Invokes Spiritual Dialogue with Guest
The concert’s special guest, renowned vocalist Janice Vidal, joined Keung To on stage for a rendition of the classic Mandarin song, “Big Brother” (Dàgē). Following the performance, their conversation moved beyond music, focusing on the encouragement Vidal had previously offered the young star during a challenging time.
Keung To revealed that several years ago, before they were well-acquainted, Vidal had surprised him by giving him a book and offering to pray for him—a gesture he described as deeply impactful.
“Every time I hear you sing, I want to listen quietly because it’s just so beautiful,” Keung To told Vidal on stage. He elaborated that her past gesture of faith had helped him profoundly.
Vidal, who openly expressed her Christian faith, responded that her beliefs sustained her and that she hoped to share that strength with him, particularly during periods of low morale.
“Honestly, in the last six months, I have genuinely tried to communicate with God,” Keung To admitted to the audience, suggesting his ongoing efforts to seek comfort and guidance. Vidal encouraged him, assuring him, “Jesus loves you, and we all love you.” Following the intimate exchange, Vidal performed her song, “The Best Version Of Me,” while Keung To took a break to change outfits.
Production Team Aims for “Round 2” Perfection
Concert producer Sze Wing Chong also addressed the power disruption following the show. In a post on social media, Chong expressed deep gratitude for Keung To’s support and compassion, noting the star’s efforts to comfort the visibly distressed production team member.
“I know I hate anything imperfect,” Chong wrote, thanking Keung To for repeatedly insisting, “It’s nothing,” after the show concluded. “Thank you for your kindness. I am incredibly grateful to know you.”
Chong confirmed that the entire production team would return to the venue on Sunday to meticulously inspect every technical aspect, ensuring the remaining shows—particularly the subsequent “Round 2” performances—would proceed without incident.
The producer also extended thanks to the audience and the artist’s dedicated fan base, known as Keung Candy, for their understanding and patience throughout the unanticipated delay. The concert series continues, with the production team vowing to maintain the high standards set by the wildly successful run despite the temporary technical setback.
The unexpected outage underscored the immense pressure involved in staging live, large-scale performances but highlighted the supportive bond between the artist, the technical crew, and the forgiving audience.
