Veteran DJ Ruan Siu-cheung Departs Commercial Radio After Decade of Service

Award-winning broadcaster Ruan Siu-cheung, known affectionately as “Brother Cheung,” concluded his 11-year tenure at Commercial Radio Hong Kong (CRHK) today, announcing his departure during a live broadcast of the popular program One Circle (1圈圈). The 58-year-old veteran cited an increasingly demanding schedule, particularly the constraints of a daily live show, as the primary reason for stepping away, though he expressed deep gratitude to the station, colleagues, and fans during an emotional farewell that saw him visibly moved.

A Fond Farewell to Commercial Radio

The announcement, made on Tuesday, marked the end of an era for the station’s committed listeners. To commemorate his service, CRHK organized a special broadcast featuring his original One Circle co-host, Lok Lok, who returned to the studio to share reflections on their partnership. Colleagues consistently praised Brother Cheung for his professionalism and his mentorship of younger co-hosts, including Tin Yan and Connie Chu.

Adding to the tributes was CRHK’s Chief Advisor, Stephen Chan Chi-wan. Chan recalled the simplicity of securing Ruan’s commitment over a decade ago, noting, “When I invited Cheung to join Commercial Radio, the remuneration was not even discussed. We thank him for the years of joy he has given us.” This statement underscores the valuable, non-monetary contribution Ruan provided to the station’s programming and atmosphere.

For Ruan Siu-cheung himself, the decision was driven by an aspiration for better work-life balance. Ruan explained that the commitment required for the Monday-to-Friday live broadcast had become increasingly restrictive, especially given his demanding itinerary outside of radio. Previous absences from the studio, often due to travel, necessitated producer Terry to step in and handle hosting duties.

Focusing on New Creative Horizons

Looking ahead, the broadcaster revealed a significant pivot toward new projects and venues, particularly focusing on opportunities in mainland China. Ruan expressed satisfaction at having completed both a stand-up comedy performance and a major musical concert this year, indicating a busy period of creative output.

He confirmed plans to release new music in the near future and emphasized the importance of carving out time for personal respite. Among his immediate aspirations is fulfilling a long-held personal goal: attending a live football match at Liverpool FC’s home stadium.

The logistics of Ruan’s departure mean adjustments for One Circle. The show, a fixture in the station’s lineup, will temporarily not be seeking a new permanent host. Instead, producer Terry will assume additional responsibilities by co-hosting the program on an interim basis, maintaining continuity for the audience during this transition phase.

Ruan Siu-cheung’s comprehensive media career—spanning acting, singing, comedy, and radio—highlights the demands placed on multi-talented entertainers in the contemporary landscape. His decision to prioritize rest and new ventures, despite his long-standing connection with CRHK, reflects a growing global trend where even seasoned professionals seek greater control over their professional commitments to sustain long-term career satisfaction and personal well-being. His contribution to public broadcasting, however, leaves a substantial legacy of engagement and entertainment for Hong Kong audiences.
