TVB Stars Celebrate Lunar New Year at Festive Staff Dinner

HONG KONG – Leading actors, executives, and staff from Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) gathered in Hong Kong last night for the second event in its annual Lunar New Year Poon Choi banquet series, blending professional camaraderie with festive entertainment and providing a stage for subtle reflections on awards season disappointments and aspirations.

The gala, attended by prominent figures including Law Tze-yat, Owen Cheung, Tiffany Lau, Hera Chan, and Regina Ho, marked a vibrant celebration of the broadcaster’s efforts and served as a traditional “謝票” (vote of thanks) to colleagues and supporting staff. The evening’s relaxed atmosphere was punctuated by impromptu performances, most notably when actor Joel Chan was initially called upon to sing. After TVB executive Virginia Lok playfully critiqued his performance, a lively sing-off ensued featuring Cheung and Fred Cheng, energized by backup dancing from Roxanne Tong, Tiffany Lau, Karl Ting, and Kaki Sham, underscoring the close-knit nature of the industry gathering.

Actor Law Tze-yat Addresses Awards Setback

A focal point of the evening was Law Tze-yat, who recently lost out on the Best Actor accolade at the 2025 TVB Anniversary Awards. Speaking candidly about the disappointment, Law maintained that the setback had not dampened his spirit, emphasizing that humility is essential regardless of outcomes.

“The greatest reward is the recognition from the audience, not the statue itself,” Law stated. He reiterated that his primary motivation for attending the banquet was to personally thank the colleagues who had shown him support throughout the process.

Law expressed firm confidence that, given another opportunity to portray the complex character “Gao Shan” from his series Golden Forest Market, he would deliver a superior performance. He views the recent awards race as merely the beginning of a sustained effort to improve his craft and professional standing.

“I have accumulated a base of support during this awards cycle,” Law explained. “My goal is a slow, steady accumulation of skills and impactful roles so that when the right script arrives, I will be at a level that commands respect. I hope to increase my standing in the eyes of the public and not fall short in the future.”

Family Support Fuels Professional Ambition

The actor also touched upon the highly public support he received from his wife, actress Tavia Yeung, who referred to him as her “No. 1” on social media following the awards ceremony. Law dismissed the public gesture as the natural expression of spousal affection, noting the deep, unspoken understanding between them.

He reserved his most emotional appreciation for his children’s simple, written notes of support. “As a father, seeing their words, however simple, was deeply moving and the most heartwarming thing,” he shared.

Looking ahead, Law expressed a desire to collaborate professionally with his wife. He mused about starring in a comedy opposite Yeung, potentially yielding simultaneous nominations for both partners. Crucially, however, he stipulated that he would prefer not to be cast as a couple or romantic leads, wishing to maintain a distinct boundary between their on-screen roles and their private family life.

The annual TVB Poon Choi banquet series provides a vital platform for internal networking and morale-boosting, reinforcing the community spirit that underpins the broadcaster’s output for the year ahead. Law’s resilience and focus on the audience’s reception highlight a broader industry shift toward maximizing artistic contribution over immediate recognition.
