HONG KONG—Local hip-hop artist PetPetShawn launched his latest extended play (EP), Unrivaled Legacy (鉅世無遺), with a highly unconventional release event on May 3. Held in Central, the gathering transformed a traditional music launch into an elaborate “Release Game Party,” merging the debut of new music videos, live performances, and large-scale interactive games, reflecting the artist’s signature style of blending gritty lyricism with unique personal flair.
The event served as the official unveiling for the three tracks comprising Unrivaled Legacy, a collection that meticulously documents the pulse of contemporary Hong Kong through the lenses of time, place, and people. PetPetShawn, known for grounding his music in personal growth narratives and observations of grassroots life, premiered the music videos for “Three Cards” (三張), “Night Walk” (夜行), and “Pandemic Flow” (疫流), immediately sharing the creative insights behind each composition.
The party’s narrative structure mirrored the EP’s thematic focus. The first track, “Three Cards,” centers on the “people” theme, delving into the rapper’s adolescence, capturing vivid memories of school culture, the emergence of internet trends, and the local “MK” fashion phenomenon. Following this came “Night Walk,” which explores “place” by focusing on the Temple Street night market in Jordan. PetPetShawn drew on his personal experiences working in bars to contrast the area’s storied past as the “Commoner’s Nightclub” with its current, somewhat diminished reality, thereby scrutinizing the gap between aspiration and daily life.
Concluding the trilogy was “Pandemic Flow,” dedicated to the subject of “time.” The track, which took four years to conceptualize, chronicles the shared experience of the recent pandemic, touching upon surreal moments such as reselling face masks and the simple act of using a pen to press elevator buttons. The artist emphasized that his motivation for this piece was purely documentation, not trending appeal.
The energy escalated as PetPetShawn invited members of the rap collective Mosaic Youth (摩四青年), Zodi and Yoda, to the stage. Their joint performance of the track “Hong Kong Elder” (港耆) ignited the crowd, marking the evening’s first major high point.
The latter half of the event shifted to the interactive element: a massive “Alcohol Snakes and Ladders Tournament.” Audience members and friends were encouraged to form teams and compete, with PetPetShawn actively participating as the commentator and judge. His lively, often humorous commentary infused the tense competition with a sense of camaraderie and levity.
The celebration culminated in two significant actions. First, PetPetShawn performed all three new tracks live for the assembled fans. Second, the crowd engaged in a synchronized “Hundred-Person Unboxing” session, where attendees simultaneously opened limited-edition blind boxes containing an NFC portrait figurine of the artist, creating a unified moment of surprise and collective memorialization.
