HONG KONG — Following a devastating five-alarm fire in the Wang Fuk Court housing estate in Tai Po on Wednesday, November 26, which resulted in significant casualties and widespread grief, individuals and organizations across Hong Kong have mobilized to support the affected community. Beyond financial aid, prominent figures from the entertainment industry have offered personal gestures of comfort and encouragement to survivors, underscoring a collective effort towards recovery.
The tragedy, which garnered international attention, prompted an outpouring of humanitarian assistance. Among those actively contributing are members of the popular boy band MIRROR. Anson Lo, known as the “Anson Lo,” not only donated a substantial sum of HK$1 million but also reached out directly to fans impacted by the disaster.
A handwritten sympathy note from Anson Lo was recently shared publicly by a devoted fan, expressing deep concern for the individual and their family. The note emphasized the sanctity of life, urging recipients to prioritize their health and minimize worry. “Nothing is more important than life itself. You must take care of your health; do not be overly anxious,” the note read. “I know bouncing back is not easy, but I will support you as we get through this hurdle together.”
The fan revealed their profound gratitude, describing a video call personally arranged by Anson Lo to cheer up their family following the trauma. The fan, who typically views themselves as just “one dust particle” among many, expressed overwhelmed appreciation for the direct, heartfelt support provided during the crisis. Despite the star’s busy schedule preparing for upcoming concerts, the fan found immense strength in the connection, promising to use that encouragement to navigate the path ahead.
Another member of MIRROR, Edan Lui, contributed to the healing process by recording a personalized message for an elderly resident of Wang Fuk Court. Addressing the survivor directly, Lui offered words of strength and solidarity. “Hello Grandma, I am Edan. I know you have gone through something tremendous,” he said. “I hope you can keep fighting and believe that everything will slowly improve. I hope I can give you some strength. Keep going, keep going, keep going!”
The family member who received the message confirmed that their grandmother, a resident of the estate, had lost all possessions in the inferno. While the material damage was total, the family expressed immense relief that their relative was physically safe, thanking Lui for his compassionate intervention.
In addition to individual efforts, the religious community has provided spiritual solace. Tsz Shan Monastery organized the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Liberation and Disaster Relief Ritual for the Wang Fuk Court victims. Images posted on the monastery’s official social media showed attendees participating in the ceremony. Among them, singer-activist Denise Ho was observed in plain attire, chanting scriptures alongside monks. Her presence highlighted the shared grief and collective focus on offering traditional prayers for those who perished and extending deep condolences to the injured.
The unified response from the entertainment and spiritual spheres reflects the broader community’s determination to aid survivors in the wake of this tragedy. These tangible acts of empathy and support are crucial in fostering emotional recovery as the affected residents begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives.
