Hong Kong singer-actress Shiga Lin recently turned a commercial shoot into a public health moment. On-set bone density screenings with her mother exposed the physical toll of breastfeeding and the silent onset of osteoporosis, offering a candid warning for women across generations.
A Family Affair on Set
The campaign for a bone health supplement featured Shiga and her mother undergoing live health checks. Though not a celebrity, Shiga’s mother—a veteran translator for major international events—impressed her daughter with her natural poise in front of the camera. “She has seen bigger crowds than I have,” Shiga joked, rating her mother’s performance 90 out of 100. The star also admitted her mother memorized the script better than she did, a detail that highlighted both their competitive spirit and close bond.
The Results That Hit Home
The health data gave the campaign its emotional weight. Shiga was relieved by her own bone density reading, but her mother’s report showed the early stages of osteoporosis—a finding that deeply concerned the singer.
For Shiga, the warning signs were personal. After giving birth to her daughter Camila, she committed to six months of exclusive breastfeeding. Toward the end of that period, she began to feel physical strain. “I felt pain in my joints when I squatted down, and numbness in my fingers,” she revealed. “These are warning signs of calcium loss.” The experience drove her to remain diligent about calcium supplementation. Now, she plans to extend that vigilance to her mother. “She might not feel the effects yet, but the calcium is slowly depleting,” Shiga said. “I will remind her to take care of her bones.”
Balancing the Generations
Will Camila follow in her mother’s footsteps and star in a commercial? Not yet, Shiga insists. “She is too young to understand,” the star explained. “I want her to know more about my job before she can truly make a choice for herself.”
Shiga knows the challenge of work-life balance firsthand. Her own mother was often working during her childhood. Now a mother herself, Shiga is determined to manage both roles intentionally. “I try to spend as much time as possible with my mother and daughter, creating memories while balancing my career,” she said.
A Broader Lesson for Families
Shiga Lin’s experience highlights a health issue that often goes unspoken. Postpartum calcium depletion is common but rarely discussed in the intensity of new motherhood. Meanwhile, osteoporosis can develop silently for years without symptoms—until a fracture occurs.
By putting her family’s health results on public display, Shiga has done more than promote a product. She has pushed a conversation about bone density checks, early detection, and proactive nutrition for women at every stage of life.
