Carina Lau Reflects on Halloween, The Weeknd, and Tony Leung’s Oscar Campaign

At Hong Kong’s M+ Museum Five-Year Charity Gala, actress Carina Lau turned heads with her Halloween-inspired costume while sharing personal updates on her recent meeting with The Weeknd and husband Tony Leung’s career milestones. Dressed for the occasion, Lau admitted the outfit required meticulous planning, particularly sourcing long nails online. “I’m not very comfortable—it’s not easy being a ghost,” she joked, adding that Leung was startled when she left. “He asked if I really needed to go that far.”

The gala, which drew figures like Chow Yun-fat and his wife, business leaders, and celebrities, also became a platform for Lau to recount her encounter with The Weeknd. She and Leung dined with the Canadian singer before his concert at Kai Tak Stadium. Initially unfamiliar with him, Lau was impressed after discovering his vast global reach. “He has over 70 million followers—I realized I knew many of his songs,” she said. The Weeknd, a dedicated fan of Hong Kong cinema, has watched all of Leung’s films and even speaks some Cantonese. He attempted, through Lau, to invite Chinese singer Faye Wong to his show, but Wong’s schedule in Beijing prevented it. “It would have been perfect,” Lau noted, “but perhaps they’ll collaborate later.”

During dinner, The Weeknd focused on film discussions with Leung, particularly expressing interest in working with cinematographer Christopher Doyle. When asked about a potential joint project, Lau dismissed the idea laughingly. “We are too old for that,” she said. “We can only offer advice or connect him with professionals.”

Leung’s film Silent Friend, representing Hungary at the Oscars, has generated excitement. Lau expressed cautious hope, acknowledging the competitive nature of awards. “I’m thrilled for his work to be recognized,” she said. “If nominated, I’ll accompany him—I’ve never been to the Oscars.”

In other news, Lau described Leung’s recent passion for driving after purchasing a limited-edition sports car. “He’s like a child, waking early to drive along scenic paths,” she said. While she supports his enjoyment, she avoids the vehicle. “It’s too low and uncomfortable,” she explained. Their trip to Taiwan was disrupted by a typhoon, but Leung showed concern for Lau’s eating habits, which she defended with humor. “He was worried about my snacking—but it’s harmless,” she said.

Lau ruled out any performance plans, recalling her own album as “a mistake” and noting Leung’s discomfort with live singing. “After The Weeknd, it’s clear we should stick to acting,” she said. “Hong Kong needs to keep up.”

The gala celebrated M+’s five-year milestone while offering a window into the couple’s balanced approach to fame. Lau’s anecdotes highlighted support for Leung’s ventures and the personal moments behind their public lives, underscoring the intersection of global pop culture and local traditions.
