Hong Kong socialite Makiyo, the wife of billionaire property mogul Joseph Lau, has officially launched her own fashion label, KUUKee. Rooted in a “luxury daily wear” philosophy, the brand debuted with an exclusive preview at the upscale boutique JOYCE in Hong Kong’s Admiralty district. The event triggered a strong market response, with several styles selling out within the first 30 minutes and a significant portion of the collection moving to pre-order status.
A Shift from Craft to Couture
KUUKee takes its name from the English word “kooky,” signifying a unique, playful, and charming personality. The venture represents a strategic evolution for Makiyo, who previously focused on a handmade crochet line called Happy Yarn. That project, while creatively fulfilling, was limited by its labor-intensive production.
“I wanted to share a relaxed life philosophy with more people,” Makiyo explained. “Since Happy Yarn is a crochet project, it is difficult to mass produce. So I decided to create KUUKee as a platform to unleash my creative universe and share it, adding playful color to everyone’s life.”
Practical Elegance as a Design Pillar
The debut collection is built around the concept of wearable, functional luxury. Bags are a prominent focus, reflecting the designer’s own daily habits. “I deliberately included a lot of bags in this collection because I carry so many things with me daily—my phone, wallet, tissues, and wet wipes,” Makiyo shared. “Carrying a bag is very convenient and brings me a strong sense of security.”
This emphasis on practicality wrapped in a refined aesthetic distinguishes the brand. It targets modern consumers who seek fashion that balances daily utility with personality and craftsmanship.
International Ambitions and Market Validation
The immediate sell-out at JOYCE suggests strong consumer appetite for Makiyo’s design vision. The brand is already working to capitalize on this momentum with the launch of an official online store to expand direct sales.
In a decisive step toward global reach, KUUKee will enter the South Korean market in late November. The brand will be available at CASESTUDY, a concept store inside the high-end fashion retailer BOONTHESHOP in Seoul. Known as a destination for K-pop stars and style influencers, Boontheshop provides a strategic platform for the brand to establish credibility in one of Asia’s most discerning fashion markets.
“Our goal is to move toward international markets,” Makiyo stated, signaling a clear ambition for KUUKee to become a recognized name beyond Hong Kong.
The launch marks a significant professional transition for Makiyo, moving from a prominent figure in high society into a serious fashion entrepreneur with a defined aesthetic and growth strategy. By translating her personal “kooky” sensibility into a commercial collection, she is tapping into a growing segment that values both function and expressive design. The brand’s ability to translate this distinctly personal philosophy into success abroad—particularly in Seoul—will be the key benchmark for its future growth. For now, the immediate sell-out in Hong Kong provides a powerful vote of confidence in her creative vision.
