Hong Kong’s beloved Cantopop legend, Alan Tam, continued his triumphant “Unforgettable” world tour finale with a dazzling ninth performance on Thursday night, drawing a glittering array of celebrities and delivering a night of nostalgia, humor, and heartfelt tributes. The concert, held as part of the “Endless Gratitude” to “Unchanging Love” series, marked the fourth show of the latter segment and saw the 74-year-old icon in fine form, blending his greatest hits with spontaneous, joyful interactions that only a seasoned performer of his caliber could command.
The star-studded audience was a veratile who’s who of Hong Kong entertainment. The legendary Wynners were well-represented with founding members Kenny Bee, Danny Yip, and Albert Au in attendance, alongside a host of other luminaries including Macau tycoon’s wife Angela Leung, actor Simon Yam, director and actor Dayo Wong with his wife, and beloved actress Charmaine Sheh, who came with her mother. The guest list also featured actors Lam Suet, Bonnie Man, Joel Chan, William Chak with his wife, Stephanie Che, Samantha Lam, Ken Choi, Siu Bong, Jim Tsz Ting, Li Kam-kai, and famed feng shui master Mak Ling-ling—a testament to Tam’s enduring popularity across generations.
A recurring highlight of this concert series has been Tam’s performance of Kara Always OK, and Thursday was no different, with the audience’s energy reaching a fever pitch. The evening took a humorous turn when actor Lam Suet, clearly caught up in the excitement, was invited by Tam on stage for a duet. However, the spontaneous moment turned comedic when Lam’s enthusiastic singing caused the microphone to blast with distortion, prompting the quick-thinking Tam to swiftly reclaim the mic, much to the delight of the laughing crowd.
The fun continued during Love Trap, when Tam spotted guests Siu Bong, Stephanie Che, and Li Kam-kai dancing excitedly in their seats and playfully called them out to join him in song. But the most memorable moment came before the poignant Friends, when Tam noticed his old friends from The Wynners in the crowd.
“Look at you all, wearing your uniforms!” Tam joked, inviting the band members on stage, a reference to their matching white outfits.
“Should we do that iconic ‘pants-dropping’ move from your first show?” quipped Ken Choi, referencing a famous moment from Tam’s opening night, suggesting a reenactment.
The laughter continued as they performed a heartfelt rendition of Friends together, a palpable display of five-decade-long camaraderie. Tam then turned more emotional, dedicating the next song to the late lyricist, the legendary James Lai. He lauded Lai’s immense contribution to Cantopop classics before leading The Wynners in a spirited version of Let’s Play, a song Lai had written for the band back in 1975, sending the audience into a frenzy of nostalgia and solidifying the night as a perfect blend of music, memory, and enduring friendship.
