Mei Tan Meijin, the 102-year-old mother of late Hong Kong pop icon Mei Yanfang, was cremated in a low-key ceremony Thursday evening at Fo Shan Crematorium in Tai Wai, ending a family dispute over her final arrangements. Known affectionately as “Mei Ma,” she died Aug. 30, leaving instructions for a private funeral away from the media spotlight – and away from her eldest son, Mei Qiming.
According to family friend and media personality Pan Xiaowen, who attended the ceremony, the cremation was completed without incident around dusk. “Mei Ma’s ‘graduation ceremony’ was completed this evening. Thank you for your concern,” Pan told Ming Pao. She added that the deceased had explicitly wished to avoid any public funeral at a funeral home, opting instead for a small memorial in a private location before the cremation.
Family Tensions Surface Over Funeral Plans
The quiet proceedings contrasted sharply with public statements made earlier by Mei Qiming, who had held a press conference demanding a grand funeral for his mother. The 60-year-old claimed he wanted to apply for 1.5 million Hong Kong dollars from the Mei Yanfang Charitable Trust to cover burial costs and even threatened to seek an injunction to prevent his nephew—the deceased’s grandson and designated executor—from handling the body.
Mei Qiming’s relationship with his mother had been strained for years. In 2022, Mei Ma placed a newspaper advertisement formally severing their mother-son relationship, citing irreconcilable differences. Despite this, he insisted on being involved in the funeral arrangements, but family members chose not to notify him of Thursday’s ceremony.
Final Wishes Honored
Pan revealed that Mei Ma’s instructions were clear: she wanted no contact with Mei Qiming and requested a simple, dignified farewell. The family deliberately scheduled the cremation in the evening to avoid media attention and ensure a peaceful atmosphere. Only close relatives and a few longtime friends were present.
The Mei Yanfang Charitable Trust, established by the singer before her death from cervical cancer in 2003 at age 40, continues to provide monthly allowances for her mother. Mei Ma had been the trust’s sole beneficiary, receiving approximately HK$70,000 per month for living expenses. The trust’s administrators have not commented on Mei Qiming’s funding request.
