Hong Kong – When Alan Ng, a 26-year-old TVB actor, got down on one knee to confess his feelings for Amber Chan on the hit dating show Belle Matchmaking Project 2 (《女神配對計劃2》), he probably expected a romantic reply. What he didn’t expect was to be put in a headlock by his own wingwoman, Sam Lau, in a scene that has since gone viral.
Aired last Sunday (13 October), the episode featured an emotional on-camera confession from Alan to Amber, a fan favourite known for her playful personality. But it was Sam’s comedic interruption—mid-declaration—that had viewers laughing and praising the show’s mix of romance and slapstick.
A surprise attack for the suitor
In a behind-the-scenes clip shared on TVB’s official social media on Tuesday (15 October), viewers saw Alan filming a green-screen segment when Sam launched a mock ambush, trying to startle him. But Alan reacted with surprising agility, grabbing her in a gentle arm lock and teasingly demanding: “Do you even know any of my family members?” Sam, without missing a beat, shot back: “I am your family now!”
The playful tussle ended with Sam dropping a bombshell—Alan was the first contestant this season to achieve a five-lamp perfect score, the show’s highest rating from its panel of matchmakers.
“Honestly, I’m thrilled for you,” Sam told him in the clip, breaking character to offer genuine praise. “You better take good care of Amber, understood?”
Alan, grinning, responded: “You’re not off duty yet. You still owe me an undercover mission—your ‘spy’ work is only half done.”
Fans were quick to notice the pair were wearing matching grey hoodies, sparking a flurry of comments. Even Hong Kong singer Jinny Ng (吳若希) waded in, writing: “These two are made for each other.”
A history of hilarious teamwork
This isn’t the first time Alan and Sam have paired up on screen. Both were contestants on TVB’s comedy talent show Fú Lù Shòu Training Class (《福祿壽訓練學院》), where their comedic timing was a highlight. More recently, they appeared together in Lan Friends·Travel Friends (《藍朋友‧旅朋友》), a travel series hosted by veteran comedian Wong Cho-lam.
In that show, Alan—who also stars in mainland Chinese short-form dramas—showcased his deliberately shaky Mandarin in skits with locals. Sam, meanwhile, took to the streets to test residents on obscure Cantonese colloquialisms, often leaving them laughing and confused in equal measure.
A new season, a new dynamic
The viral moment underscores a broader trend in Hong Kong television: audiences are hungry for authenticity mixed with humour, especially in unscripted formats. Belle Matchmaking Project 2 has leaned into that, pairing real emotional stakes with playful banter—a formula that’s clearly resonating.
TVB has yet to confirm whether Alan and Amber’s on-screen connection will continue off-screen, but the show’s producers have teased “new twists” for the coming episodes.
As for Sam, her unexpected turn as the show’s unofficial jester has earned her a new fanbase—and perhaps a spin-off of her own. “If they offered me a job as a professional wingwoman,” she joked in a later clip, “I’d consider it. But only if the pay matches Alan’s locks.”
