Actor Zhu Jianran joined seven prominent Hong Kong directors yesterday at a special thank-you screening for the romantic comedy Wave of Love (《浪花男女》), turning a standard Q&A session into a stand-up comedy showdown as the filmmakers traded jokes about their last-minute cameo roles.
The event, held on August 11, brought together actor Zhu Jianran and the film’s “Seven Golden Sponsors”—directors Chen Yongcan, Mak Kai-kwong, Sam Yuen, Chan Tai-lee, Li Kwong-yiu, Ng Wai-lun, and Fung Chi-keung. All seven appear in the film, playing a group of wealthy investors.
‘Let’s Make a Memory’
When asked why the production invited so many directors for small parts, Fung Chi-keung quipped that while the roles were brief, the team wanted to involve heavyweight film figures. “I thought, why not all play together and leave a memento?” he said.
The directors shot back in unison: “So you only called us because the parts are small?” They then insisted they only agreed because they happened to be free, turning the exchange into a roast session that had the audience laughing.
Revenge of the Assistant Director
Fung revealed that during the scene featuring all seven “gold sponsors,” he had to act himself, so he handed directing duties to his assistant director. “I gave him full authority,” Fung recalled. “I told him, ‘Whatever these directors have done to you in the past, now’s your chance for revenge. You can call NG whenever you want and demand they improve their acting.’”
Director Chen Yongcan also shared a behind-the-scenes gag. During a scene where the “sponsors” look down at their phones, Chen noticed everyone had double chins. When it was his turn to film the same action, he deliberately covered his chin with his hand, drawing laughter from the crew.
Box Office Reality Check
As Wave of Love enters its third week in theaters, Fung acknowledged that ticket sales have not yet met expectations. He expressed gratitude to the filmmaking community for stepping up during a challenging period. “It’s when times are tough that you realize your network isn’t so bad after all,” he said.
Fung also thanked the attending audience and urged them to spread word-of-mouth, hoping more viewers will experience the film’s summer energy.
Crowd Turns Into Mini Fan Meeting
After the event, the directors and Zhu Jianran posed for a group photo with the entire audience. Many fans lingered outside the theater, waiting to chat, take selfies, and collect autographs. The cast and crew obliged every request, turning the lobby into an impromptu fan gathering and bringing the evening to a warm close.
With its blend of star power, humor, and grassroots support, Wave of Love continues to rely on personal connections and community spirit to boost its box office run—a testament to Hong Kong cinema’s enduring camaraderie.
