HONG KONG — Hong Kong actor and singer Alex Lam is basking in the glow of fatherhood once again, having welcomed his second daughter just weeks ago. The 37-year-old, son of legendary Cantopop star George Lam, shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the delivery room during a fashion event in Tsim Sha Tsui on Wednesday night.
For the first time, Lam successfully recorded the moment he cut the umbilical cord in the delivery room, a milestone he had missed with his firstborn. “This time, I got it on camera,” Lam said with a grin. He gave his wife top marks for her composure during childbirth, calling her performance “perfect.”
The new father of two joked that he is already planning a romantic getaway for just the two of them, once his wife has fully recovered from her confinement period—a traditional post-childbirth rest period observed in many Chinese families.
When asked whether he hopes to try for a son in the future, Lam was candid. “If it happens, obviously that would be great. But for now, the priority is working hard to earn milk money,” he said, adding that he and his wife are taking a relaxed approach. “We’ll let nature take its course.”
A Touch of Chinese Medicine for ‘Mommy Wrist’
Lam, who recently posted photos of cupping and bloodletting therapy on social media, revealed that the cause of his discomfort is an unlikely source: carrying his newborn. He has been diagnosed with “mommy wrist,” a common repetitive strain injury affecting new parents, particularly those who frequently hold infants.
“I’ve been carrying the baby too much,” Lam admitted. “I’m seeing a Chinese medicine practitioner and also undergoing physiotherapy.” The admission highlights a growing awareness among fathers of the physical toll of parenting, a topic often associated only with mothers.
Grandfather’s Special Touch: A Name from George Lam
Lam also shared a heartwarming family tradition: the naming of his second daughter is being handled by her grandfather, the iconic singer George Lam. The elder Lam, known for his love of naming, is reportedly taking great delight in the process.
“He really enjoys the whole naming process, so he’s taken charge again,” Alex Lam said. The baby’s name will be revealed at her full-moon celebration, a traditional Chinese ceremony marking one month after birth.
Unlike the birth of Lam’s first daughter, Xinming, when George Lam and his wife were out of town, this time the grandparents are in Hong Kong and were able to witness the newborn’s arrival home. “They saw her come into the house right after she was born,” Lam said. “It was a special moment for all of us.”
